Any one with small nodules had a thyroidectomy?

by gncrzy3, Jun 13, 2009 09:50PM
Has any one had a thyroidectomy or partial thyroidectomy who has small * under a cm* complex nodules?
My white cell count has been a little low , my thyroid panel came back fine. But my dad told my aunt passed away from some type of lymphoma, and the way they found hers was lumps in her neck. Mine were found on a Mri, I have a spinal disease, syringomyelia, and just had my 2nd fusion in my neck. The saw " cyst" on the mri.. which lead to an ultrasound that said I had 2 complex nodules both 8mm, and that the thyroid was mildly enlarged. I realize these are not huge... but my understanding is that complex nodules are the most suspicous. I don't want to wait until it progresses if it is cancer. I don't see an actual endocrinologist for 3 weeks. I am not sure if they can get an accurate FNA on complex nodules of that size. Has any one been in this situation or have any advice? I am a mother of 3 and that is all I can think about.

They *might* be able to do a biopsy of the 8mm one but they really reserve it for those >10.0mm or 1.0cm.

My orig 2 large ones were benign upon surgery (partial) and then they found 2 very small incidental tumors upon final biopsy that were pap micro's.  I bring this up bcz I still have a small nodule in the intact side that is 4.0 mm and is complex .. i get ultrasounds ev yr now to check on it after every 6 mos of it being stable.   They will keep the other side in unless something gets suspicious, etc.

You can ask for a nuclear scan which may help determine if its cancer or not.  But not always .. it can leave you more in the "what if's" than answers sometimes.
