Anyone else's upper stomach getting fat

I have noticed that alot of my weight gain seems to be my stomach above my belly button. I had PT, no official diagnosis with any thyroid disease, hyper or hypo or anything. I am on synthroid for 2 months which I started 1 month after the PT. As long as I wear jeans or pants that come up to below the belly button , I'm okay. If I have a pair that come up to the waist, forget it, they will not close at all. Is this normal and has anyone else experienced this?
I know it sounds like a weird question, but I am curious. Is it the meds?

Dosage is irrelevant.  The only thing that matters is getting your Free T3 and Free T4 high enough in their range to relieve symptoms, which can include low metabolism.  Symptom relief is all important, not just test results, especially TSH.

Please post your thyroid related test results and their reference ranges so that members can assess the adequacy of your testing and treatment.

oh my goodness!!! I thought it was me, I did not think in a million years it was my thyroid problem, have had it for years and on meds, i have noticed that even if i lose weight, I am getting wider and wider around my midsection. I just couldn't get it, if you see me from the back, I look fine, you can even see sort of a waist, but if you see me sideways, or facing me, it seems like I'm pregnant!! I just turned 41 and though it was age and indoor weather!!! Do you know or does anyone nkow what to do?

Add me to the list of the fat tummy....I saw someone thought it was due to menopause...well I went thru menopause early...13 yrs ago...the tummy is a recent addition....not welcome either I might add.
I was wondering....does the use of thyroid meds help this weight gain?? Oh I hope so.....

You do all that biking and walking and all that exercising and can't lose weight?  There is no chance in h*** that I'm ever going to lose any!!!!  My only exercise is walking up and down the stairs!  And before anyone starts to tell me I need to do something, I have back problems, maybe leading to more surgery this fall, and I can't do anything right now.

Sorry you aren't losing any weight spouse but all that exercise is good for everything else.  Good for you!

How do you cover the belly fat, thank goodness the fashion has been baby doll style tops, however, I am short and depends on the length if can I wear them or not, cause it cuts my body in 1/2 and not good. I wish someone could find a cure for hyper and hypo so help us lose the weight. I tried to buy some big shirts, but need the width at the bottom of the  shirt to cover the swelling belly, and the tops are always to big up at the top, so what do you do? I have started back in the office and have nothing that fits, i have no cover me up clothes. the worst feeling is looking down every day to see this growth on my mid-section, where did that come from? worse when it is that time of the month, it doubles in size, hard to dress that week let me tell ya. I have treadmilling every day (at least 2 miles) and the only thing i have to show for it is my back problems acting up, i keep running, bent over if i have to, thinking maybe inches will come off? but ask i can see from some of the above responses this is not so.

let us know if this diet pill works, it will be a miracle, and the company will skyrocket in their stock, these days i guess it is good that at least once stock goes up instead of down. what was the pill called?

Yes, I have someone at work ask me if I was pregnant. So my doctor gave me a diet pill and I dont have a thyroid gland at all.

Also, I think adrenal issues contribute to the problem.........

I have known about thyroid nodules for the past 10 years, but that time also coincided with menopause, so I attributed the weight around my stomach and above as the normal body fat shift of menopause.  I am two weeks post-TT (it was cancer), and I am gaining weight around the middle also.  I  just assumed that this was normal for my age, I never attributed it to thyroid problems.  Maybe you are on to something.

My understanding is that cytomel is not for losing weight.

There is a thread on here about cytomel.  Please check it out before taking the meds.  This cytomel seems to be the new fad for losing weight.  I don't think you would want to put you health at more risk.

Take care

Hi Linda

I have been on synthroid 100 for 5 weeks now and haven't lost any weight.  I exercise at the gym 4-5 times a week. I treadmill 4 miles, bike 10 a day and lift weights three times a week.  I also do abs tapes 5 days a week.  Usually all this exercise keeps me in great shape.  I just feel like I am growing and will never stop.  I feel all this exercise is for nothing because my thyroid still isn't working right.  I am going to ask my Dr. about Cytomel, because I have done some research and read a few books, and it seems to me that cytomel T3 could help me loose weight. I wish you all the luck.  I will let you know what my Dr. says.  Gina  (My tsh is 18)

Thanks All.
I didn't realize that my question would get so many answers. I'm glad it did. This is one reason I joined this forum. Just wanted to confirm if anybody has these things going on or if I was the only one.
I'm glad I'm not alone and it's not just all in my head.
Thanks again.

Yes I too have gained the 'thyroid' tummy and even a nurse asked me at the hospital if I was SURE I wasnt pregnant!
I simply smiled at her and said...'This is all thryoid belly Hun'.
She looked quite disgusted with me lol.
I am 48 so guess some of mine is the middle aged spread too but yes I definately have the fat belly and the butt too.....I seem to have spreaddddddd in width since I started having thyroid probs 18 months ago.I gained 16 kilos in weight and havent lost even one kilogram even though I get on the treadmill everyday.
Hope that helps you

I have gained most of my weight in my stomach it seems and yes, I look  like St. Nicks sister.  (lol)

I worry about the weight along with everything else.  I have lost most of my hair, but that is the least of my worries right now.  However I will try to lose the weight if nothing but for diabetes and b/p issues.  I'm not diabetic and don't want to be, so I'm tryng to nip this in the bud... best I know how.

Our thyroid friends have been giving out great resources. Now we have to figure out which one is best and continue from there.

Take care

Terri

If you are at an 82 - you my friend are in a crisis of definately hypothyroidism.

You need to be treated as soon as your doctor can see you.

AND if he/she is not concerned RUN - AND FIND SOMEONE ELSE!

This is not serious ( could get there but) ....... -  I don't want my message  to get you wondering - I have seen higher numbers - but you definately have something going on and need to get moving on some sort of therapy.

Most TSH should be around 1.0 or 2 to be at a normal level.

I think I'm stll losing weight but the remaining weight I have left seems to be right around my midsection/stomach. I notice it all the time because pants will actually be slightly baggy around my legs, but tight around my stomach where they button. It's a lttle awkward.

I wouldn't worry too much about weight...that goes for everyone! Just focus on feeling better and once that happens, you can focus on perfecting the way you look. :) Even though I'm slowly losing weight (I can still afford to lose another 15 - 20 pounds), my appearance is still suffering in other areas (hair, skin, veins seeming to want to stick out in my legs more so than ever before, etc.), I want to get my body under control before I'll be able to fix the rest of the problems...hopefully fixing my thyroid will fix the rest of the problems, anyway!

Good luck if you are on a quest to lose weight, though--just be careful and don't burn yourself out!!!
