Can anyone tell me anything about this? Is there a high chance that this could be cancer? If it turns out not to be cancer what do they normally do? Do they leave the cyst? Do they take it out? Why would a cyst bleed into itself?
Also is a cyst the same as a nodule? I keep seeing the term nodule
Did the US report indicate any microcalcifications within the cystic nodule? Do you have the dimensions of the cyst? There is evidence to suggest that both the shape (i.e., more tall than wide) and the presence of microcalcifications within a nodule (mixed, cystic, or solid) are suggestive of cancer.
My understanding is that, if the cyst is benign and not causing other difficulties unrelated to malignency (e.g., pressing on your airway, causing horseness), that monitoring (e.g., periodic ultrasounds to track any growth/shrinkage/other change on the nodule) and/or medication to "shrink" they cyst is the most typical course.
Sorry TopSecret I don't have any other info. I just spoke with my dr. briefly on the phone. He never mentioned anything about calcifications. What he told me was exactly what I wrote in the OP. I didn't ask questions because I didn't even know what to ask.
I can feel the cyst on my neck and if I look hard enough I can see it. The dr. said it was rather large...what ever that means...but I was never given dimensions. The size of it is partially due to it bleeding in on itself. I had seen the dr. a few weeks before this for other stuff and he always runs his hands down my neck checking for lumps and it wasn't there or at least couldn't be felt. Then when I came back a few weeks later it could be felt and seen. It grew rapidly I guess from the blood that leaked into it.
This may be a coincedence and a stupid question but could high blood pressure meds cause a cyst to bleed in on itself? The previous visit I had with the dr. I was put on high blood pressure meds. Then when I came back a few weeks later for a blood pressure check that's when the cyst was there. Probably just coincedence but it was something I had thought about.
My biopsy is scheduled for July 11th. Not sure how long the results take to come back to my dr.
I'm going to check out that endocrineweb site so next time I meet with my dr. I know what to ask. Thanks for the web address redhead.
Also, make sure you ask for copies of all of your sonograms, biopsies, etc. It helps out if you have to go to other doctors, etc. I have a binder with my paperwork inside.
