Anyone lost weight on natural thyroid extract/Armour?

by RavingMad, Nov 10, 2008 04:58AM
I had a TT in Jan '07 & up until recently had been taking thyroxine (gradually increasing dose from 50mcg - 200mcg). Over the past 2 years I've put on heaps of weight & have been on the hypo/hyper rollercoaster, suffering from awful hypo symptoms. I've recently begun taking natural thyroid extract (similar to 'Armour' but the Aussie version) & have weaned off the thyroxine. My prescribing GP says that I'll lose weight & feel better. It sounds too good to be true!! 3 weeks into my med change I do feel better, fingers crossed the weight will start to decrease (I eat super healthy & do a moderate amount of exercise). Has anyone else had success with weight loss on natural thyroid extract or Armour???

I haven't yet - but I am seeing why I am having trouble - I don't exercise much.

I was on Synthroid from Oct 07 to July 08 and did not lose weight in spite of exercise and a good diet. I switched to Armour in July and am now back at my ideal weight. I also feel much better on Armour.

It's been a year for me on it and I still am struggling

It all depends on the person not the meds.

I maintained weight on Armour. I was not overweight before I began treatment. But since being switched over to T4 only med, I have gained a total of 60 lbs. Not saying that was the cause of my weight gain but it is a coincidence. It could partly be due to menopause also. Guess I'll see what effect adding T3 will have, as well as BHT. Just realized I was gaining a few pounds everytime I went to the doctor.

I have been on armour for at least 6 years, no wt loss--even with an unreadable TSH (less than 0.005), actually wt gain---also had a few kids along the way......however this year I have lost 32#, with alot of workouts, and extreme diet change--healthy eating.

I lost 17lbs on synthryoid. But I had to work hard for it. I switched to desciccated thyroid medication over a month ago, I havent noticed weight loss from the medication switch, I actually dont expect to. I know I have to workout 5 days a week and eat VERY healthy for that to happen...*sigh*
