Autoimmune Hepatitis and Grave's Disease

My 16 yo son was diagnosed with Grave's disease August 07.  Started on Tapazole and developed severe itching and hives.  Started on PTU Oct. 07.  June 08 his liver enzymes were elevated (normal liver enzymes prior to PTU).  AST 49, ALT 146, Gamma GT 58.  Thyroid ablation July 2008.  PTU discontinued Oct. 08.  Synthroid started Oct. 08.  Consulted liver specialist, ANA titre 1:160, ANCA positive, liver biopsy recommended. Are the increased liver enzymes due to Grave's or the drug therapy (PTU).  If it is from Grave's, how and why.  If it is from the PTU shouldn't it reverse after the PTU was stopped.  How long do you have to be off PTU to see if it is from the drug.  A liver biopsy is recommended.  How will this help.  What can this procedure show to aid in lowering his high liver enzymes.  Can this be reversed and if so what treatment is recommended.  Is this an ongoing problem for the rest of his life.  Is this auto-immune hepatitis.

The PTU meds are directly linked to the liver emzymes. The liver is an amazing organ and can recover and regenerate healthy function again. Your priority along with making sure his hypothyroid levels are optimal are rebalancing the liver fuction. The liver is responsibile to convert hormones into the system as well.

The tests you are undergoing are important , but will not solve the problem and aid the liver into repairing itself.

Take a look at detoxing the liver. Diindolymethane and Milk Thistle definately aid the liver into repairing cell tissue to clean out that liver again. It is vital to look at PH levels in urine and make sure your body has optimal PH levels to assist the liver repair. Acidic fruits like lemons, grapefruits and acai berries are important to add into this diet. This is not a quick fix, but if you maintain proper PH levels and aid the liver into repair - you can get things cleaned out and help get things under control again.
