Biopsy scheduled

by mamapete3, Feb 29, 2008 03:59PM
I just returned from the endocrinologist.  I wasn't satisfied with my Internist's advice to "do nothing further at this point" after the results of my ultrasound showed multiple nodules, with a dominant nodule (mixed solid & cystic) measuring 2.7 x 1.5 x 2.1.  Thyroid function is normal.  I will have a biopsy on the dominant nodule in 4 days.

The majority of "nodules" turn out to be benign.  That being said, in my case, I had two rather small nodules that were complex and showed signs of calcification.  I also was told that my Thyroid function was fine (in hind sight, not so much...)  I went through the whole process of a FNA and then subsequent TT in Sept for what turned out to be cancer.  I don't think it's ever wrong to err on the side of caution.  If you have a funny feeling about it, get a second opinion.  Good luck, let us know.

Good for you!  The most important thing is to be your own advocate, and it sounds like you are doing a great job with that!  I agree with pep88 wholeheartedly - if you have a funny feeling about something, get a second opinion.
My doctor ordered further testing on my nodules after an ultrasound, and I'm now scheduled for a total thyroidectomy in 12 days.
I hope that everything turns out well for you - keep us posted.
Best of luck!

I have been ill with hypothyroidism for 6 years. I never had a doctor qualified to help me until now. With research on the web and coming here to the forum- with my history of RAI and symptoms I was informed by members here to get an ultra sound. A nodule was found. My doctor  is  not concerned - but I went to a surgeon and am scheduled for FNA on Monday, I suppose I will find out next week if I had worried for nothing.

Many years I didn't listen to my gut when I should have. I submitted to the whole anxiety and depressed thing. I lost 4 years of my life b/c I sat back and did nothing.

I am nervous about Monday - but I am glad I know there was a reason why I felt my symptoms.

It never hurts to get involved especially in your own health. YOU know how YOU feel and no doctor ever really can tell how you feel.

Stay focused and keep educating yourself on your situation.

Just thought I'd post a follow-up.  My dominant nodule was benign!  I have another ultrasound scheduled in 6 months.  I am satisfied with my Endocrinologist's recommendation to wait since I've had the biopsy.  I did not agree with my Internist's recommendation to just do nothing.  He didn't even suggest I see an Endocrinologist.  Thanks for all your comments and support!  I'll post an update in a few months!
