Hi Kiddo,
I sympathize with you, had a similar experience.  I started out Hyperthyroid, overactive.  It was horrendous, I nearl went to A&E I felt my life was in danger at one point as was having "thyroid storms".  Basically I believed I had extreme flu, really high temperatures at 104 degrees F, sweating buckets, so tired I couldn't stand up, aching all over, throat pain, hair falling out in clumps, dry skin, aching hands, pins & needles.  Intermittently I would be "hyper" sweating like crazy and very active, followed by crashing fatigue.  Discovered I was hyperthyroid.
Doctor put me on meds to suppress the thyroid, and boy did they do that!  I wound up a zombie unable to move, sleeping most of the day or just lethargic, horrific fatigue and body aches.  Had to wait 3 months to see an endocrynologist, on a waiting list.  In the end I saw one and he took me off the meds.  He said he thought I'd had a viral infection that had attacked my thyroid making it over react.  Hence hyperthyroidism and dangerous thyroid "storms".  BUT, I was on them too long, and it suppressed my thyroid into a hypo state.  Should have come off the meds quickly and let the thyroid recover naturally.
I have never really felt the same since then, even though my thyroid levels are apparently "normal".  I still get body aches and pains, never got my usual energy levels back, sluggishness.  All that is over a year ago.  Now I'm getting tested again for hypothyroid.
BEWARE taking meds for too long, it's got to be just right, or it can push your poor thyroid right under, if you just have an acute attack like I did.  However, I really needed them at the beginning, as my heart was racing so fast I could have keeled over, -  just had to be off those meds quicker and I couldn't see an endocrynologist early enough.

I see I am not alone.  I have gained sooo much weight due to hypothyroidism that I have been blaming the aches & pains on the weight problem.  I didn't realize it could be directly from the thyroid problem but I also have never been this FAT in my life so I didn't know how it should feel.  I am mentally motivated & want to lose the waight but my energy & the pain is causing me to be all talk & no pain.  I am 28 & feel like im 82.  IT *****!

Ah, I am calling it "falling down the hill"!  I was feeling so good after my thyroid surgery and now am experiencing fatigue, muscle pain, joint pain and pain in my feet in the mornings.  I am on 112mcg of Synthroid now.  It has only been 3 weeks since my surgery, a few more to go before my blood test to see where I am.  My bloodwork prior to my TT for a fast growing Multi-Nodular Goiter was smack in the middle of range.  Hmmmmm....hoping it gets better soon!

Assuming you are on T4 type meds, it usually takes 4-6 weeks for the full effect of the meds to start showing up.  Then, depending on your thyroid hormone levels, you may have to increase your meds gradually until symptoms are relieved.

Note that I said thyroid hormones.  The biologically active thyroid hormones are free T3 and free T4 ( not total T3 and total T4 ).  TSH is a pituitary hormone that is only an indicator of thyroid status.  It doesn't correlate well at all with hypo symptoms.  Free T3 has the best correlation with hypo symptoms.

So the most effective approach is to get your doctor to treat your symptoms by testing and adjusting your "Frees", with medication as required to alleviate your symptoms.  You'll probably have to have  a discussion with your doctor about this approach, because most frequently they tend to use TSH as the diagnostic test to determine med dosage, which can leave a patient with lingering hypo symptoms.

I am too so glad to have found this forum.   I had a partial thyroidectomy about 5 years ago.    I take .05 of Synthroid.   2 years ago I started having a severe pain in my right hip and upper thigh area.  It was so excruciating that I often couldn't sleep.    I was sent to physio, orthopaedic specialists had MRI's and CT Scans etc etc.   Turns out it was my thryoid and I was apparently over medicated with the synthetic hormone.     It took about a month on the new dose for that all to subside.   Now  2 years later I am starting to have the neck and shoulder pain some of you here are talking about.    It is frustrating trying to determine what is the correct dose/treatment and sometimes I think this is just something I'll have to stuggle through the rest of my life.   Keep the info flowing!!!

Wow!  I am so glad I saw this forum.  I was just diagnosed with a cold thyroid nodule.  I have also been getting tested for Lyme Disease because I have such bad aches and pains all over.  This is the first time I have seen or heard anything that said thyroid issues can cause muscle pain.  I will be sure to ask the Endo when I see him next week if the two could be related.  Thank you !

I am also in same boat like you guys , since 2 years i have been having those achy body and calfs/upper arms pain . I had diagnosed Hypo in 2 years because of alleviated Anti body TPO. Since then my level is not yet stabilize for  2 months , it is giving roller coaster ride of hyper and hypo. Last year i developed Planter Facsittis  on my left foot as other says in morning it really hurts. Has any one also have issues with canker soar under mouth and cold soar sort of things in upper side of mouth also ? , any one also has dry mouth issues ?.

I didn't go for RHEUMATOLOGIST but i am sure those ache/pain /tiredness are assocaited with thyroid , i must say with treatment it did improve but not resolved yet.
I hope one day i can say i am symptoms free also i want to mention i don't have any one in my immediate family has this issues ,but i found one of my mom's side uncle has Hyperthyroid , Is this consider to be hereditary  ?.

Hang in there guys , hopefully all symptoms will be resolved.

I have started have lot of muscular pain this past year or so. It is mostly the left side of my body but sometimes on the right too. It feels like strained or cramped  muscles mostly in my back, shoulder, arm and neck area. In general there is an achy feeling all over but I tend to have  more dull shooting pains and such on just the left side. My doc said that my thyroid levels showed a basically non functioning thyroid. I also have a thyroid nodule on my left lobe so I don't know if that has anything to with it or not. I was beginning to think I had fibromyalgia but the more research I have done has shown that thyroid problems such as hypo, mimic alot of fibro symptoms.  I am getting kinda concerned because I have some inflamation of something in my armpit. When I feel around in the same spot under both arms, the tendon or lymph node or whatever it is, feels larger on the left side. I don't know if it is related or not. My first thought was breast cancer but it is more in the upper ribs under my armpit area, not really in my breast.  I have heard that hypo can cause all sorts of muscular and joints aches and pains that mimic alot of other problems. I am praying that when I get my nodule removed and the docs start me on med to get my thyroid levels normal and stabalized, that all these aches and pains will go away.

Am just starting to explore information on thyroid / cold nodules / thin isthmus, etc. after suffering from unexplained body pain for some years now.  Unexplained muscle pain all over, plantar faciatis (sp?) - the list goes on.  Have been tested for everythig in the world except for really looking into the thyroid issue.  (A simple blood test was done - but after complaining of belly pain, my doctor ordered an upper GI and colonoscopy.  They showed nothing -- so the gastrologist ordered a CT scan which showed a nodule on the thyroid!  (Also explains this weight problem I'm been fighting for as long as the body aches! )

After being scared to death for a few days and several CT's and a PET -- they still don't seem to know how to treat this.  My regular GP wants me to have it surgically removed.  (Wait a minute!!!  If we don't know if there's a definite cancer here, isn't this a little bit of a knee jerk reaction?  -- There was "a relative lack of tracer uptake within the isthmus.  Possibility of a cold nodule in this region could not be excluded.  Thyroid ultrasound for further evaluation is recommended.)

WHY DIDN'T THEY DO THIS THYROID ULTRASOUND BEFORE shooting me with radioactive material that didn't give any results in the end anyway!

Any comments or help?  Thanks --

I am not alone..I feel better about that .. weird thing is that my TSH was only at the highest probably a 5.0 and that was recent .. it was really more like 2.4 when tested this year twice but looking back I had subclinical symptoms that got better or went away with new TSH of 1.8 BUT if other poster says it takes a good yr for symptoms to abait (jt pain, muscle, etc.) then probably that is why my Endo is giving it some more time!  All my muscular problems started 2 yrs ago along with other hypo symptoms .. surgery was in Jan this yr so not on Synthroid long enough at a good TSH to really tell if it is making a difference yet.  BUT the calf cramps are GONE!!!

Yes, somedays worse than others. It seems if my shoulders, neck aren't hurting, then my calves and thighs start..also hip pain at times.. Upper arms, and some days it's joint pain.  I was told it takes a year afer stabilized TSH for pain to go away...by my Internist (not endo) and from the American Thyroid Society, they call it myalgia.... If you're not hyper, warm baths help, and soft massage.  I seem to have a sensitivity to most meds so I avoid pain meds for the most, unless I have a super bad headache.

Mine is in the muscles attached to the lower ankle and run inside up along the inside of the calf.  I've started some exercises and I *think* that + some self massage is helping a bit .. some mornings it is excrutiating to get up out of bed and place my foot on the floor .. it goes away about 10mins later .. I thought tendons but Dr's tell me muscular and probably from the thyroid stuffs.  Hmmmm and Ugh I say all rolled into one.  This is going on for a year.  It is muscle weakness pain is what it feels like to me and I have flat feet to begin with so I am getting a double whammy.  Seems so unfair as I already wear very supportive shoes 24/7 unless doing something special  Oh well .. thanks for the whine.

Oh yeah.  I swear some days my warranty must have expired and I'm falling apart.  Right now the biggest "ouch" are my heels (plantars fasciitis).  Can hardly walk in the mornings or if I've been sitting for awhile.

Yet another gift from the hypo fairy. :P
