Bone loss question

by Loribop, Jan 21, 2009 06:33AM
Hi, my name is Lori and I'm a newbie here.  I was diagnosed with Hashi 12 years ago and am on Synthroid.  I also have Celiac disease and Asthma.  My question is about my shins.  They are always bruised and even the slightest touch hurts them.  When I run my hands over them, the bone feels lumpy.  Is that normal?  My mom has osteoarthritis.  My endo said with Celiac it doesn't matter how many vitamin suppliments I take, they may not get absorbed.  I have to admit, my husband buys the right vitamins, I just often forget to take them.  Are my legs sore from bone loss?  Can this be reversed?  Will I end up in a wheel chair?  My legs are hurting all the time now, especially to the touch.  Even wearing socks is starting to hurt my ankles.  Does anyone else have this?

I appreciate any replies.
Thanks,
Lori

Have you tried a good Liquid whole food source of vitamins....liquids are easier to absorb and with a whole food source, even easier. Are you also taking calcium and vit D? Maybe you can research and find that in liquid form as well. Some drs are using strontium to build and strengthen bones.

Thanks so much for writing.  It means more to me than you know.  My Endo called with my lab results today.  Vitamin D was 15 and he said it should be at least 35.  Also, my thyroid TSH was off again.  I bought 1000mg liquid Vitamin D on the way home today, plus a Calcium/Magnesium suppliment (whole food source).  I really hope it works, I'm so tired of being tired!  Thank you again, good advice!!

Your welcome....well the vit D deficiency explains a lot of the body aches for you along with thyroid being off. You got a double whammy....I hope you feel better soon!! :)

Welcome.

Did your dr mention getting a DEXA scan done?  That would seem the best way to determine the state of your bones and what amounts of supplements to take.  I know it has helped in my own situation with bone issues.

Good luck.

I had the same problem and my Vitamin D was 17. I had this problem for years before they found it. I took 50,000iu of Vitamin D for 12 weeks and my levels came back up. Now I take Caltrate (twice a day) to get extra calcium and the D I need.

Did your Dr mention taking a prescription strenght Vitamin D. 15 is pretty low and would warrant a higher dose than normal. It's going to take longer to come back up with the over the counter strengths. I would ask him about it and see what he says.

Good luck! And just so you know...I feel so much better now that my D level is normal. I was really feeling terrible for a long time and the D helped wonders!

I was away last week and finally picked up the Vit D script.  It is for 1.25mg.  I think  that is the same as 50,000 iu.   Also, bad cholesteral is high.  Maybe the new thyroid meds and Vit D will help lower that.

Thank you for your coments.
