I have a buffalo hump. It led my doctor to diagnose me as having cushings disease and a tumor on my pituitary gland. The tumor removal left me without a functioning pituitary gland and a condition called "panhypopituitarism." I find it frustrating because there is hardly any literature out there on my condition, most searches return results for hypopitutarism, which is different.
Possible causes for a buffalo hump:
AIDS medications, such as amprenavir, crixivan and agenerase
Excessive use of steroids such as prednisone, cortisone and hydrocortisone
Cushing's Disease due to excessive production of cortisol
Adrenocortical carcinoma (adrenal gland tumour)
Severe obesity
Insulin resistance
Diabetes
PCOS
I also have a Buffalo hump. I had blood work done and they said my cortisol levels were a little high and to come back and get them re- tested in 3 months. I was also wondering if i don't have crushings what else could cause the fat pad.I am overweight but not obese and my doctor said weight gain can also cause it. It's not something like about my body and would like an answer on howw to change it!
Thanks Barb,, I had a x ray done and Im ok that way,, my doctor says it is a "fat pad" and since Im not morbidly obese she says it is a symptom of what she believes to be Cushing's disease,, a tumor on the Pituitary that causes over production of cortisol,, She had her nurse explain to me that it also causes Hypothyroidism,, well I meet with the Endo Monday,, Ill see if she was right lol ,, I was just wondering if anything other than Cushing's could cause it. Thanks guys for responses.
Osteoporosis causes a "hump" in the back, if it progresses enough...
Thank you for your insight Red,, ;D Yeah,, I was reading up on it and your completely right.
Cushing's isn't a thyroid disease. It is (usually) a pituitary gland problem. It seems to be one that does have a Buffalo Hump as a symptom though.
Some people who have Cushing's might develop thyroid disorders too.
