Can a person be hyperthyroid even though all symptoms are hypothroid?

My daughter has been told she has hyperthorid and has a nodule on her thyroid.  But she has all the symptoms of hypothyroid, extreme fatigue, weight gain, dry skin, excess body hair.  Her doctor told her it is possible to be hyper with these symptoms.  He wants to do radioactive iodine for this condition.

I'm concerned about this treatment because it may cause her to have even more fatigue and weight gain.

Does this diagnosis make sense to you?

Hi AKA-
You should ask for a copy of your daughter's blood tests.  I have Hashimoto's disease and was diagnosed during my annual gyno exam.  My dr. said she felt a goiter in my neck and that I needed to get tested.  She did the blood work and my levels indicated I was hypo- not hyper- as indicated by the goiter.  I had an ultrasound done and the iodine dye test- both showed my nodule was benign.

What my endo explained to me was that my thyroid hasn't completely stopped working yet and is working overtime to produce enough T3 and T4 (both of those levels are normal; my TSH was through the roof at my initial diagnosis) which caused it to enlarge.  After reading a lot on the internet, I discovered that this is actually normal for someone with my condition and that it may or may not decrease in size.

Bottom line, take a look at the blood results.  High T4 indicates hyper/overactive; low T4 indicates hypo/underactive.  TSH is produced by the pituatary gland and if it is above 5 then that is another indication that you daughter is hypo- instead of hyper-.  Hope this helps!
