Can hypothyroidism cause recurrent infections?

Does anyone know if hypothyroidism can cause increased susceptibility to infections? I am normally very healthy in that respect, but since going borderline hypothyroid last month I had suffered with a viral infection, and 2 bacterial chest infections, or maybe it's the same one that didn't clear properly the first time. I just can't seem to shake it.

Just wondering if any of the infections anyone has had, has been staff? or infections in the blood? as opposed to sinus? I have had both with my thyroid issues and wonder if there is a link?

I agree!  Although mine were recurrent MRSA.  Thank the Lord you don't have those!  Some doctors won't find the link, or even humor you on it, but isn't it coincidental that Hypothyroid goes hand in hand with recurrent infections...hmmmm.  Maybe we should all carry around Ph.Ds.  We're doing a better job than the docs!

Just a thought.

I know how you feel... since having Graves Disease I have suffered so bad with sinus infections, I have never in my life had just a sinus infection, it lasted for 2 months.  You are not alone, with an autoimmune problem the immune system just can't kick it out, it stinks!!!

Count me in.  At 41 I had my very first strep infection.  I have two small children and they have both had strep several times and I had never gotten it until I began having symptoms of hypo.
I asked my Dr., " don't you think this means something has happened to my immune system?"  Her reply, " it is strange isn't it?"

Thanks kitty for your reply, I was starting to get worried thinking there was maybe another more serious reason that I keep getting this thing. Thanks very much.

I think so, in some people. After all, it is usually an autoimmune disease.

I have had an upper respiratory infecton in December, May and now currently for 2 weeks duration. My husband was sick with me in Dec, but was over it in 2 days. I went on for about 2 weeks.

Another previous member here also said the same thing about herself.
