Can someone help?

I am 28, never been pregnant. About 2 months ago my TSH was at 8.8 and I have been on Synthroid 50 mcg ever since (I have a family history of Thyroid disorders and my maternal grandmother had Hashimoto). I'm going back for a blood test in 10 days to check whether the dosage is right for me or not. In the meantime, I am going on 4 months since having a normal period and my weight keeps going up, even though I am watching carefully what I eat and have been exercising 3 times a week.

Anyone who has been through this: how long before things start going back to normal? My husband and I want to start trying to conceive and I want to have an idea of the type of process we will have to endure.

Thanks for your help!

Hello,

Your TSH is still high.  Target should be around 1 - 2.0.  Did the doctor increase your meds slightly?

What is the reference range for the FT4?  I'd like to see the FT4 at least middle of the range or a little higher.

Please ask the Doc to test FT3 next time as well.  FT3 neeeds to be in the upper half of the range as well.

Give yourself a couple of months for things to level out.

Best wishes

Hi ladies,

The results as of last Thursday are: TSH 2.26 and FT4 1.5. Down 3 pounds, 10 more to go... still no period :-(
Any idea how long before my body should start responding to the lower levels and my ovulation gets back on track?

Thanks for your input!

Hi,

your levels need to be adjusted so that you feel good and your numbers are well within reference range.

TSH target when medicated is about 1 for many.

Please make sure that the doctor tests FT3 adn FT4.  These two tests are actually more important than TSH for letting you know where you really stand as they are the active thyroid hormones.  For most people these should be middle to upper half of the reference ranges, AND you should feel good.

Let us know when you get your results.

Keep up with lower carb diet (seems to work better for people with thyroid issues) and do try to get some daily exercise.  Losing weight with hypothyroid is  more challenging than without, even when well medicated.

Best wishes

Hi and welcome! You really need to wait until you get your lab results which should be done 6 weeks after starting meds and 6 weeks after an increase until you are at optimal levels. When you reach an optimal level and stay regulated over a period of time, then you will hopefully be able to start to lose the weight. :)
Get a copy of your labs with results and post them here so we can take a look with you! :)
