Can you help me interpret my ultrasound report?

by KChic, Sep 18, 2008 08:27PM
Findings: The right thyroid lobe measures 4.3 X 1.4 X 1.9 cm, while the left measures 4.7 X 1.3 X 1.5 cm.  Thyroid isthmus measures 0.3 cm.  Overall throid echogenicity and echo texture are within normal limits.  Color Doppler shows an unremarkable flow patatern throughout the thyroid gland.

Multiple thyroid nodules are identified.  Three solid hypoechoic nodules are noted in the right thyroid lobe, the larges of which measures 0.5 X0.4 X 0.6 cm in the interpolar region.  In the left thyroid lobe, an enechoic nodule is seen in the upper pole measuring 0.5 X 0.3 X 0.4 cm.

Impression:
1.Three nonspecific nodules in the right thyroid lobe, the larges of which measures 0.6 X 0.5 X0.4.
2. Tiny cystic nodule in the left thyroid lobe measureing 0.5 X0.3 X0.4 cm.
3. Otherwise unremarkable thyroid ultrasound examination.

What does this mean?

No inflammation of thyroid tissue is present; the overall size of thyroid within normal limits about 11 cu cm; three solid nodules are reflecting less ultrasound waves then surrounding tissue, they can be monitored for growth [by follow up ultrasound in 6 to 12 months}.

Thank you for taking the time to read my comment.  I know I should wait to see the doctor, but I picked up my own results.

What about the cystic one on the left?  Is there a difference between nonspecific and cystic?

These nodules are very small, so more investigation is not necessary or possible at this point, unless you are under 20 y.o.If the blood tests are normal and there is no family history of thyroid abnormalities or cancer, you may repeat the ultrasound 12 months from now preferably at the same place, to see if nodules are stable in size.
The only reason for this that  3 nodules are hypoechoic, so at this point it hard to say about their feautres; the cystic nodule is a blister filled with fluid [colloid or blood]

Again, my sincere thank you.
