Confused...Contrasting symptoms

by mississippimom05, Sep 18, 2007 05:08PM
So I am pretty confused.  I went to the doctor this afternoon (general physician) and he believes that I am having thyroid issues, but I am having contrasting symptoms from both hypo and hyper.  He was concerned about my muscle weakness and my reflexes that were also very weak.  He is sending me for a slew of tests tomorrow including CBC, CMP, Lipids, TSH, ESR, CPK, and ANA.  All of my symptoms according to the doctor pointed to hyper, but I have been gaining weight over the past year or two.  Can a person have contrasting symptoms or symptoms of both hyper and hypo?  I have been researching it and know if it is hypo the TSH will come back over 5-6.  What will the TSH come back if it is hyper?

you can swing hyper/hypo if you have Hashimoto's thyroiditis...an autoimmune thyroid disorder...I have that...if you are hyper your TSH will be less than 1. It is good that the doc is checking the ANA levels...

Hey,  I really dont know anything about hypo or hyper or much about the levels...sorry this is all new to me.  I have only seen my endo one time before surgery and have to wait another month or so before I see him.
I would think that you could jump from each one though.   It seems like to me I do the same thing, one symptom goes with one and another goes with the other....LOL...ok now I am confused just writing that !!!!!   Good thing he is running all those test too that is a step in the right direction.   What about an endo do you think he will refer you to one  ?

uMMMM, Yeah I agree, I am hypo right now. (can't ya tell) Actually I think I went hyper to hypo a few times in my past before I diagnosed my own thyroid problem. They should of paid me instead of sending me the bill.......... So does pain and everything come with hyper to?

Hyperthyroid and hypothyroid can share some of the same symptoms.

Not all hyper lose weight and some gain.  Not all hypos will gain and some will lose.  Weight issues is an individual matter and genetic.

The other ladies are correct too.

We can't second guess which thyroid issue we have.  Test are the only way to a diagnose and for us to know for sure.
