Confusing lab results

by Ann_Marie, Apr 06, 2008 06:03PM
4 years ago I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's.

This is a very long story so I'm going to quickly sum it up.

I was fine on Armour until 6 months ago when my TSH went too low and I was told to go off the med per my Dr. I did and then in December my TSH went to a low normal (.38), calcium was a little high 10.8 so they tested my PTH  level which at the time was 9.0 (range: 14-74) . I was pushed away by everyone even though I was having a hard to breathing, racing heart, all hyper symptoms. They said nothing was wrong.

My TSH is now a tiny bit higher (.95) but never goes higher than 1.0 so I am still feeling a little hyper. HOWEVER.....Now I'm having massive kidney pain (trace blood in urine) and NO ONE will do anything. I have one good Dr who is helping me but she's hard to get into to see because she's a cardiologist. I'm tired, gaining weight and all kinds of hypo symptoms to. I'm even lactating as I usually do when I'm hypo (not pregnant, normal mammo)

My lastest lab results as of today.
TSH .95
T4FREE .66
PTH 5.1
Blood Ur: Trace

Why would my T4Free be so low if my TSH is low and why would my PTH continue to decrease? I've noticed when my TSH starts coming up the tightness in my throat and heart rate both start going down and it feels soooo much better but when its down like this I cant breath. Any suggestions would be great. Thank you

Here is some info on the PTH

And some on the tsh/free t4.

Your TSH is techinally fine. Around 1 is usually the goal. However, your tsh looks too low. What is the reference range for free t4?

Range for FreeT4 is .66 (.80-2.60). The Dr said I should be on Thyroid meds but wouldnt that push my TSH even lower? I'm already having Hyper symptoms just because of that.

I know its not Hyperparathyroid because my PTH is too low 5.1 (14-74). This is why I'm so confused. None of this makes sense. Could it be a Pituitary Issue causing my thyroid to be so off?

Thank you

Yes, the thyroid med will make the TSH lower. I had hyper symptoms with a hypo TSH, though.

The outside possibility is that this is pituitary. Rare, but it must happen to someone!!

Have you searched hypo-parathyroid? That PTH is way low.

I think I have figured it out. Wow. Now what? My TSH is low normal, and FT4 is low, PTH a 5.1

A suppressed TSH with a low or low-normal free T4 and free T3
indicates hypothyroidism due to a pituitary problem. An elevated TSH indicates
hypothyroidism due to a thyroid problem.

Have you had a second opinion?

Print out the resarch findings. .

Did you find out how the low PTH fits in?

I have been to 18 Drs and none of them are getting it. They dont realize how severe my symptoms are. A LOT of my blood tests are coming back abnormal (including monocytes and many others) but to be honest Drs around here are stupid. I have found one that is listening but this is not her field so I'm at a loss right now.

To answer your question. I have a low PTH and am lactating (not pregnant) I've had a mammo and that was fine. I think they need to check my Prolactin level but no one will. Its like pulling teeth to get anyone to do anything. Really depressing.

I'm sorry you have to deak with this.

It is all too common.

Will the doctor who listens at least order the Prolactin test and you can go from there once you get the result.

It amazes me that docs will deny a blood test, but we are the paying customer.
