Could these symptoms be hypothyroidism?

Normal TSH 1.28 but low T4 0.56. Have hair falling out, fatigue, depression, insomnia, fluid retention, numerous headaches, brittle fingernails, and fibromylagia. Am on Lyrica and Cymbalta. do you think that this could be hypothyroidism?

Now my T4 Free is 98 but my TSH is now 0.24 and so I'm now on Synthroid at 50 for 4 days and 75 for 3. Has anyone else had this problem?

Thank you both. I am having more lab work done this Wednesday, so perhaps I'll have a better understanding of what is going on. My physician has weaned me off Cymbalta for my fibroymalgia, but it hasn't made a difference except my pain is increasing w/o it.

when I don't take my medicine I get some of those symptoms. I was diagnosed with athyroidism when I was a few months old. So yeah, it's a possibility.

Oh - and I do have many of the hypo symptoms (fatigue, brain fog, cold hands/feet; inability to get warm, no libido; slight depression; inability to lose weight on strict diet + exercise; hair recently started going brittle/dry and started falling out more.

Thanks again,
Anna

Hi,
Sorry to jump in here with my own situation. But I also have TSH "normal" at 1.95 (lab range .4 to 5.0). My Free T4 is .9 (lab range .6 to 1.6). Would this free T4 be considered low enough to indicate possible hypothyroidism?

I'm seeing an endocrinologist in a few days, but I don't know how much I should push for further investigation of this.

Thanks,
Anna

Hi,

if your T4 is low, it could definitely be hypothyroid.

Your doctor should test FT3 and FT4.  FT4 should be at least mid-range.  FT3 should be upper 1/2 of the range.

If you doctor says you are ok with a T4 that is low you need to find another doctor.

Low T4 and Low/normal TSh is indicative of secondary hypothyroid and needs to be treated with thyroid medications.  TSH should be ignored and meds should be dose based on FT3 and FT4 targets.
