Cure for Hashimoto's?!?

Hello, I often give donations to the causes (cure for different cancers, cure for alzheimer's, etc) but I have yet to see any organization at all working on a cure for Hashimoto's. I just don't understand why.  It seems there is someone working on a cure for everything in the world except Hashimoto's.  I've been searching the internet for years so I could donate but have yet to find anything.  Is no one working on a cure?  Thyroid Disease affects people overall and is miserable; I would gladly give a donation to an organization or scientist but can't find one.  Has anyone heard of anything?  Thanks.

It is interesting to see peoples antibody levels drop, several members have mentioned this in the past. But they don’t let us know if their good new continues to progress. So let the forum know if you continue to have a drop in antibodies and drastically lower or go off thyroid med completely.

If only modern science could pinpoint what made the antibodies go down the war-path in the first place.

Good to hear that you take whole body health seriously and seem to have your Hashi under control.

After one decade of being hypo on T4 meds, and another decade before Hashi Dx,  and a few years of hypo / hyper (big fun) , I am finally feeling the BEST ever after switching to Erfa natural thyroid a while back and doing a lot more health wise on my own.

If anyone's hypo for a long long time, it can send the whole body out of whack- that was my case.

After spending a year researching all my odd symptoms that were somewhat thyroid related I came up with a plan. Ended up raising my body PH through diet for 3 months to rid the digestive system of low PH loving bacteria, helped rid the GERD too. Consume very little grease and sugar - as this feeds gut bacteria imbalance creating brain fog and body pain. I cut out Lactose, and limit soy as best I can. Went gluten free for three months, it helped cut gut bacteria, but I can now eat gluten again. Rebalanced my adrenals with natural supps and adaptogens. Had all the important vitamins / minerals tested, and Magnesium seems to be the one my body likes,. but I also take C for adrenal support and potassium for muscles. As a product of the 60's, I still have some childhood mercury fillings, as they crumble, I get them replaced with the new ceramic fillings. Never had a metal toxic test though.

What it has taught me is to question everything a medical professional does when they 'practice' on you. The worst specialty docs I found were sleep docs, and gastro-intestinal docs. They both seem to ignore that as mammals, physio-chemical imbalances effect sleep and that digestive health is DIRECTLY linked to the nerve and possibly immune system.

Have I one the battle with Hashimoto? No, but I have finally taken control, or at least I am in the the drivers seat! And I no longer take a boat load of other meds for all the separate symptoms I once had.

****So am I now cured?  Absolutely not.  I still depend on natural thyroid replacement to live and feel 'normal'.****

The "remission" part, your ND's words confuse me. If cancer was the case, it would make sense. Sound to me like you're in the drivers seat, a good place to be - Instead of Hashi taking you for a ride!

We're not "cured" until we no longer need any thyroid med at all to be symptom free with proper T3, T4 levels, and our thyroid antibodies are permanently under the threshold.

I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's over 1.5 years ago.  My MD put me on thyroid medication but told me there was no cure.  I found a ND and have been working with ND for about 1.5 years.  My TPOab antibodies were greater than 1000 on 10/2010 and my TG (thyroglobulin) antibodies were 35.

Using holistic treatment (which involves a lot of things) - my TPOab dropped to 300 in 7 months and TG was less than 20 iUmL (normal).

15 months laster TPOab is 104, TG still good.

I am on 1 grain of Naturethroid (found it much better than synthetic hormones) - today my ND told me because my T3 levels are high - ND is dropping my dosage to .75 grains.   TSH =1, T4 =8 (normal).

ND thinks I am in remission.

What did we do?  Tested my digestive system and found that I had a fungus and high levels of bacteria in intestine - we corrected that.  Tested for heavy metal and found out that I was heavy metal toxic with lead and mercury.  Got rid of that.  Found out I allergic to dairy and soy - eliminated that from my diet along with sugars.  Found out that I was Vitamin D and B12 deficient - corrected that.  Took 400 mcgs daily of selenium (it reduces thyroid antibodies).  Began taking a product known as thyrocare (contains minerals and herbs that support healthy thyroid function), increased exercise.  Tested my adrenals for function - found out they were not functioning correctly and we corrected them thru supplements.

I believe the body is miraculous - given the right conditions and circumstances - I think we can help the body cure itself.  Knowing that I have a predisposition to thyroid disorder I will continue thru diet, supplementation (if required) and exercise to do what I have to do to keep this disorder in remission.

Actually people can die from issues related to thyroid, not knowing  they had thyroid issues until there 2nd heart attack, stroke, organ failure ect. That is part of the awareness.

Seems like they'd rather find more diseases to up prescriptions than find cures and lose prescriptions.

Here I thought you were another guy at first, (says male in your profile), very few here. LOL

It IS sad!  The good news is that if they ever crack the "cure" for one autoimmune disease, the rest will probably follow rapidly.  If they figure out how to selectively suppress the immune system, the rest of the autoimmune diseases ought to go down like dominoes.  For many of us, it's probsbly already too late...too much thyroid destruction to recover.

Hi Everybody, I have had Hashimoto's Disease since the age of 21 so I've now had it for 23 years.  I understand no one dies from it but I never understood why there doesn't seem to be an organized effort. goolara brought up a great point about a group researching autoimmune disease but the thyroid diseases didn't appear on the list.  If I use an example of a disease that has quite a few organizations researching for a cure, it would be Parkinson's Disease.  No one dies from Parkinson's but they can die from issues related to it such as pneumonia.   I'm not trying to compare any diseases but it has always frustrated me that no one seems to be researching any cures for getting rid of the antibodies. Over the years, Hashimoto's has caused me to lose my hair (I'm a female), contribute to infertility and just cause me on many days to be way too tired.   Ever since I was diagnosed, I have always been looking to find some type of organization that was connected to researchers but here I am 23 years later and it's the same thing.  You're right, the drug companies are just way to powerful.  Makes me sad.

I recently read about a group (pardon the vagueness) that is doing research in autoimmune disease...type 1 diabestes, of course, is their first priority.  They had a list of six or eight other autoimmune diseases that were on their "cure" list, and neither Grave's nor Hashi's made the cut.  Surprise, surprise!

I agree that Big Pharma is sinking virtually nothing into R&D for any "cure" anymore.  What makes money is developing drugs (or redeveloping existing ones in different enough format to be patentable) that people will be on for the rest of their lives.  A Wall St. pharmaceutical industry analyst said that there are two possible disasters when running clinical trials on new drugs...the first is if you kill somebody...the second is if you cure them.

Yes, do let us know if you find anyone doing legitimate research in thyroid disorders.

Perhaps, I went on a little to much.

My opinion only. We have organizations, but on the surface they dont seem to be "cure driven". I dont want to put them down but -they appear to be about treatment (good), and sometimes not very open to all treatments (anti T3, not good) after you read about them. Will they take donations? Anyone likes donations, but what will they do with it, by pizza on Friday? If you find out let us know!

I believe its time for a change, I'm sure there are many others that share this opinion. Your timing is very interesting, as there is an increasing interest to bring thyroid awareness more to the surface and in a drive for the cure - or, if there could be one at all.

Very interesting comment from a new member.  Thyroid awareness itself is new, Last month was thyroid awareness month. not to many people are aware of that or even what the thyroid is. This is some 'underground' interest that is surfacing to do more. I sense in the future there will be more.

A cure?  Most people don't no that many die indirectly from thyroid disease. They die from something else that may be caused from, a symptom of thyroid malfunction - like a heart attack or some other organ failure. Hopefully this turns around and thyroid itself is more recognized as a cause. Its not recognized as one in the 'killer disease' group - so, lack of a drive for the cure.

"Is no one working on a cure?" - Scientifically, not so much it seems.

As for a cure in thyroid disease (Hoshimotos and Graves), elimination of the cause of antibodies is what needs to be looked at - thats way before the 'cure' stage. Many holistic 'curers' out there, so far will antibodies disappear from there treatments ?- I have heard stories but not seen anything documented that is proof. All kinds of 'snake oil' claims, out there, but no real scientific proof of a cure.

People bring this up time to time and dont seem to understand the difference from pain old hypothyroidism (a disorder not a disease and possibly curable) and the real disease versions of Hoshi, Graves, and cancer.

Most disease 'cure' organizations are not backed  by pharmacy groups - it seems like thyoid is kind of corrupt that way- they seem to favor one med- thus no desire for a cure if its all for the pharma companies. A group that is searching for the cause and not in it to target meds or 'pay off' med companies would be ideal.

Where is your location, and do you have thyroid issues your self? Dont say at all.
