Diabetes and Thyroid

by Bethie0112, Jul 22, 2008 11:16AM
I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes last November.  I am taking Metformin, lisinopril for BP and Tricor for cholesterol.  Last week I went to the lab for tests and all those problems are alot better than they were in Nov.
However, the thyroid tests came back not so good.   T4 was .99   TSH  5.531   and TPO  912
Appt is not for another week.  What does all that mean?
Thanks

The metformin may be affecting your thyroid hormones. One of the cautions for the drug is to possibly modify your thyroid hormones.

The TPOab result, however, indicates an autoimmune thyroid disease. Hashimoto's would ba a good guess, from the look of your TSH. Tests for other antibodies and POSSIBLY a thyroid ultrasound would be the next step.
