Dizziness, Palpitations and Cough

by amlpnl69, May 06, 2009 02:41PM
I am 30 years old and recently dx with Hashimoto's.  My first TSH was 5.5 March 09, TPO 823 and TSH 2.9 April 09
Started Synthroid April 09 and getting retested in May. The reason I originally visited my MD was for lightheadedness and heart palps. EKG normal. Before thyroid results came back started me on SSRi thinking symptoms may be from stress. Had severe reaction to SSRI and MD discontinued. Got results back and thought symptoms were likely from thyroid. Started Synthroid. After starting Synthroid lightheadedness went away as did palps. They have come back now 4 weeks after starting Synthroid. Have already seen great improvement in dry skin, dry eyes, energy level. Any ideas?

What dose are you on and when was it started?  I too was recently diagnosed with hashimoto's in April and my synthroid was increased to 50mch about 2 1/2 weeks ago.  I am starting to see VERY little relief but I know I have a long way to go.  Were your Free T3 and Free T4 tested as well? If I can just take a guess it would be that you are not stabalized on your meds yet.  Congratulations on finding a doc that believes your lightheadedness is from your thyroid!  Most doc's don't belive it even my own but i know otherwise!!!!

If you didn't have FT3 and FT4 along with TSH, definitely request them when you have your next labs drawn.  Palps can be a side effect of Synthroid (or any hypo meds).  They can also be an indication that you are overmedicated.  It's not quite a month since your last labs, and the rule of thumb is to wait six weeks between labs to give the meds a chance to stabilize in your system.  However, if your palps increase in duration or incidence, I might go in after five weeks, especially if FT3 and FT4 were not done in your previous labs. The free's are essential in sorting out what's going on with your thyroid and what symptoms may mean.

If you find that you are not overmedicated, but react to thyroid meds with palps, ask your doctor about a beta-blocker.  These help palps a lot.  I've been on BBs since not long after I started levo. I think they're here to stay.
