I'm not an excessive exerciser.  I run about 3-4 miles 3 or so days a week. And I walk my dog for about 30-45 minutes every night.  I'm also one of those people that just can't sit and watch TV.  I keep 9 pound dumb bells on my coffee table so if I'm watching TV I will lift my weights.  I'm just an active person.

My endo, told me the same exact thing. I think they just think we're stupid or maybe we won't have the energy to do some research on this.

Did I mention that I also used to eat a gallon of ice cream in 3 days (15-20 years ago)?

I start gaining weight once I start having the hypo symptoms and even more after I start taking Levo. I was going to the gym but as the Levo was not helping too much, I did not see any results. Now I switched to Armour, I have more energy so I can resume exercising.

Liz94, how much do you exercise?

Twenty years ago I just had to stop eating my morning bagel and I was loosing 5 pounds in no time, and I did not even know where the gym was

When my endo told me I had to have a thyroidectomy one of the first questions I asked him was "Am I going to gain a bunch of weight?"  He looked at me funny and said "Not unless you start overeating and stop exercising."  Then when I met with the surgeon I asked him the same thing. He looked at me funny as well and said "why on earth would you gain weight from getting your thyroid removed?"  So, a few months ago I saw my endo and asked him again about weight gain he told me that with the dose of Synthroid I was on there was no possible way I could gain weight if I was eating a normal diet and exercising regularly, which I do.  I had my thyroid taken out last December and I haven't gained any weight at all, I'm exactly the same weight I was the day I went in for my surgery.  And that is after losing a great deal when I was on the LID.  As soon as I went off the diet and back on Synthroid my weight went right back to where it was and it hasn't changed since. And my dosage has been all over the map!

Get a new doc ASAP!!  That aside yes the thyroid has everything to do with your  metabolism. Some people gain and some people loose and some people dontdo either . Everyone is different.

I was heavy anyway before all this thyroid mess started for me 2 years ago.My bi polar meds are notorious for weight gain,

I have now lost the weight I gained with the head meds and the weight is coming off.
I try to eat 6 small meals a day.I have given up all sodas diet and regular.( the weight really dropped off then).I am holding at 184 this week and I am thrilled to weigh in  there. I was around 225 when all this thyroid mess started.

So I am living proof that throidless, bi polar people can loose weight. It is simply a matter of burning more calories than you consume.as on poster put it on the bi polar forum.

Your going to find a big majority of "specialists" in endocronology are that way of thinking. I hate to be sexist - but most are males and won't bother thinking any other way. ..... at least in my past situations.

First make sure these "specialist" doctors are thyroid educated. Most are not and know only about diebeties - but feel qualified to treat thyroid disorders.

That's why they're thought are so closed minded.

Pep is right - just getting on meds is not the cure all for us patients who gained weight with our conditions. Wish to be true but not :(

AND ironically the diets formulated for patients with diabeties are the best plans we as thyroid patients can follow.

Bad news is honey - if you are not regulated yet and still swinging up and down in TSH - you will not lose weight. so with that said.

to minimize the gaining - get on a diet similiar to South Beach - or the Zone diet and try to maintain what you can until the rest falls into place. STAY OFF CARBS AND SUGARS --- ALL OF THEM

Mild walking is totally the best thing to do and even lying on the couch - grabbing a 5 lbs weight - (or bag of flour) and lifting it to keep you arms toned is great for us too.

I have to just add that most endos and all docs really are cautious about what they say regarding weight and thyroid problems.  Just being on thyroid replacement does NOT automatically make weight "fall off" of you.  It just doesn't happen that way (darn it!).  YES it does factor into why hypothyroid patients gain weight, but it took a long time for most people to gain it and just taking replacement will not, in and of itself, make it come off.

There are some who are lucky enough to have that happen, but there are MANY others who have to work at it even with replacement.  Therefore, most docs just tell you that a healthy diet and exercise are warrented and needed (which is true always!).

That being said, the reason most of us put on weight is because the hypothyroidism makes you too tired and lethargic to get out and get at that exercise thing.  Ask Stella5349 about diet.  She's got it down pat as to why people with hypothyroidism suffer with their diet choices...

My endo told me the same thing, also claimed ALL my symptoms were probablly not related. Got a second opinion and was told they WERE ALL realated to my thyroid isssue.

Get a second opinion. Doesn't have to be a Endo, reg doc's and a good nurse practioner can often be better.

And fast, after I went back and in read your profile that your TSH was >100!  Sounds like his speciality is insulting patients!
