Dose too low? pregnant

by ThyroidMom, Apr 02, 2008 11:16AM
I have been on 50 mg synthroid for a couple of months and my last test results were TSH 2.6, FT4 1.28.  When that test was done, I was 4 1/2 pregnant (2 1/2 weeks since conception).  My endo doesn't think that any increase is necessary.  However, I've read articles that discuss how need for l-T4 increases when pregnant and am concerned I am not taking enough.   When I stressed this to the doctor, he said if I want I could break a pill in half and take 75mg/day.  Will this be enough?  I guess the real question is what is my target TSH & FT4 level during first trimester, and how much synthroid is necesay to reach optimum level?  Will it change throughout pregnancy?

Well, isn't that good advice - if you want to take an extra half a pill go ahead!  Yikes.  Usually, adjusments to levels are made in 12.5mcg increments (that is how the dosages of synthroid run), so it might be enough of a difference.  If you take a higher dose, will you be able to get the doctor to test you to make sure you are at a good place?

Your instincts are right on.  I have read the same info regarding pregnant women requiring additional thyroid medication.  I can't remember what the target TSH is for pregnancy, but I have read it over on the doctor's forum from time to time.

I know it is almost impossible to get a post on the doctor forum, but it might be worth a try if you get a chance.

Hang in there, I think you are on the right track, now you just need to get your doctor there with you.
