Dr. Lupo All symptoms of hypothyroid-lab results normal?

by curvecuti, Jul 11, 2008 10:04AM
I am a 41yr old white female.  I have every symptom of hypothyroid.  I have had my level tested 3 times and the Dr. refuses to treat me unless my TSH is above 3.5.  Below are my lab results, can someone tell me if they are truly "normal"?

These are from my physical in Dec. 2007
TSH-2.917
Thyroxine (T4)-9.3
T3 Uptake- 28
Free Thyroxine Index 2.6
Triiodothyronino (T3) 193

This TSH is from yesterday 7/10/08
TSH-2.171

The other values have not come in yet.  Should I see someone else?  What else could be causing all these symptoms?  She suggested I see a dermatologist about my hair falling out. I am on Zoloft for depression.  She had no suggestions about the constipation, dry bumpy skin, fatigue, weight gain and my inability to loose any weight even on very low calorie diets, heart flutters, or heat/cold sensitivity.

Has your doctor also tested your adrenals or for PCOS....just a thought. Also, we need your reference ranges posted with your tests because labs very. You also didn't have any autoimmune tests for the thyroid done....if you had hashi's you can be sick with hypo syptoms (symptoms) even with a somewhat normal range of TSH.

With the blood test results you posted here, most doctors will not treat you. However, keep in mind, good doctors treat symptoms, not just look at the blood test results. and there are cases people feel sick but all their tests are in the normal range.  Your TSH is on the high side, the new range most doctors use these days are 0.3 to 3.0. some people must have their TSH at around 1.0 to eliminate all symptoms.  So, with that in mind, you can try to find another doctor and see what he/she say,  or if you can not find a good one, try take a little thyroid supplement meds to see if that help, try 25 mcg synthroid first, after 2 or 3 weeks, if you still feel hypo, add another 25 mcg... let you body tell you if you are on the right track.  I have had thyroid problem many years, I adjusted my dosage many times, our body changes for some reason. so you need work with your body and how do you feel accordingly. good luck..
