Dr. wants me to have my goiter removed.

My docter says that he wants my goiter taken out.  He wants me to take medicine (synthroid)  I don't want to have surgery, or take medicine.  What will happen if I don't?  It is the size of a large golf ball.  My wife is nervous and wants me to take the medicine to shrink it.

I had a goiter too.  I originally went to the endocrinologist because I had a problem with my parathyroid.  I had to have that removed so when they found that my thyroid was enlarged the Dr. suggested removing that as well.  I questioned it....why should I remove it?  The Dr. advised that they almost always end up growing...I found that lying down at night, It would almost block my airway.  So, when they removed the parathyroid I had a total thyroid removal as well.  Really was quite easy...I take medicine everyday and have not had any problems.
