I had a goiter too. I originally went to the endocrinologist because I had a problem with my parathyroid. I had to have that removed so when they found that my thyroid was enlarged the Dr. suggested removing that as well. I questioned it....why should I remove it? The Dr. advised that they almost always end up growing...I found that lying down at night, It would almost block my airway. So, when they removed the parathyroid I had a total thyroid removal as well. Really was quite easy...I take medicine everyday and have not had any problems. Good luck!
