Dry mouth /hashimotos

by rohit_786, May 24, 2008 02:58PM
Is it common to have dry mouth in hashimoto's thyroiditis ?. I have been noticing very dry mouth for quite some time now it is more dry that urge to drink water /bad smell from mouth as well . In the night mouth so much dry that wake with white film on my lips/mouth contraction .
I do have muscles /joint pain . I don't think it is because of Syjorgen disease but curious how others are doing in Hashi with dry mouth.

Well I have serious dry mouth issues as well but it started after I had radioactive iodine.  My dentist has tried to help me as it makes my teeth hurt as well but nothing really helps it.  I wonder if you don't have a yeast infection in your mouth?  I was at my regular doc on Friday and when I mentioned the dry mouth she checked me for yeast. Especially since you have the white tongue and bad smell.  Get checked for yeast. If it's not yeast then you can get Biotene toothpaste and Biotene mouthwash at the drug store or Walmart. They don't make it go away but they sure help a lot.

I have Hashi and I am always thirsty.  I can't go without water or it's painful.  I stopped drinking diet soda and that has helped some.  If I am in church, I still have to take water with me.  I keep cough drops in my purse to help also.  I know how frustrating it is!!

Well according to my doctor this is not yeast as soon as i drink some water my whiteness in my tongue just go away or some times if i use tongue scrap it cleans it . According to my doctor it is not yeast it is normal dry mouth which was because of hashimotos and it is common , may be it could be because of levoxyl side effects.
Biotene reminds me that i was using month ago and surely some help but didn't eliminate it . I will be started using from today i just bought it again.
Do you guys think it is common in Hashi/Hypothyroid patient to have dry mouth ?.

I am not sure.  My dr. won't ever give me a reason.  I thought it got worse after my TT when started on meds.  I don't think it's one of the listed hashi symptoms, but I know I am always thristy.

It is very common - it is more so b/c of the thyroid meds then the actual autoimmune disorder.

Drink alot of water and keep the saliva glands hydrated. If they become dry - infection builds in them and causes swollen glands.  That is painful - and I am just coming off that one.

Just a thought....I'm on week three of a mega dose of Vitamin D because I was very deficient and just in the past few days I've noticed a difference in the dry mouth not being so bad. Also, my muscle pain and weakness is gone now and Vit.D deficiency can cause muscle achiness and weakness.  Maybe next time you are in for bloodwork maybe have them run a check on your Vit. D levels. Couldn't hurt.

You brought very good point here . Last month i tested Vit D and my total Vit D was 27 (Reference range 25-80) so i believe i am low side of Vit D  and also have muscles pain/weakness as well. My doctor said use Vit D 1000IU every day but it doesn't seem to help.
I will be redo Vit D test on Wednesday again.

My vitamin D was 13 so I was really low. I'm on a prescription dose of 50,000iu once a week for 4 weeks. Took 3 doses before I felt any better but I really do feel much better now.  I still have the dry mouth but I can tell it's getting better. Today is the first day I haven't had to eat gum all day long.

Which gum you usually use for dry mouth , is it specific or any regular gum help. ?

by Liz94, May 26, 2008 07:28PM
I eat Trident, that's what my dentist told me to use.  I also floss my teeth twice a day and brush with Biotene everytime I think about it. And I use the Biotene mouth rinse twice a day.  Also, I keep sugar free sour Jolly Ranchers in my purse, they help. I do not want to start having dental issues in the future so I'm kind of a freak about my teeth right now!

Boy what you don't learn on this forum.  I have all of the above symptoms and I am also on 50,000 units of Vitamin D 2nd week.  I think I will get the trident gum and the biotene tooth paste.  I presently use a natural toothpaste called Uncle Tom's.  I love it but if this other will help I'll try it.  Thanks to all of you for the information.    linda

Does anyone know what is the optimum Vit D level one should have ?. What could be the reason of vit d deficiency in thyroid patient even if they expose enough to sun ?.
I personally think my symptoms are related to vit D deficiency which requires high dose but again enough Vit D can create toxic.

Liz94 , When you test Vit D again please let me know your level so i can get some idea how long it took your Vit D level to go up from 13 to optimum level when using 50000Iu /week.

I will let you know. I take my last one this friday and will go next week for blood test.

Applecore: My level was 13 (very low) and I'm taking a prescription Vitamin D called Drisdol.  No idea what he will give me to maintain it once it gets to an optimal level but I'll let you know.  I sure don't want to get low again because I'm feeling better everyday now and I'm convinced that this deficiency was the culprit.

I think you are right Vit D can create lot of problems , You mention your dry mouth symptoms get better after using Vit D supplement. I have extreme dry mouth which is killing me , i am taking Trident pretty much whole day and drinking too much water , it is surely helping but point is why i even have dry mouth , is this can be something related to either thyroid or vit d ?.

I have terrible problems with a dry mouth, awful taste and painful teeth & gums. I have posted on here about it myself. I am swinging between hyper and hypo thyroid and get it all the time so don't know which causes it. But I was also told by my endo yesterday that fluctuating female hormones also are a big culprit and can cause this, as can low Calcium levels. So she's started me on Calcium, hope this helps.
