Due to pregnancies - have symptoms that mimic Hashimoto's Thyroiditis

by kimmy4sofar, Jun 13, 2007 12:00AM
Since my first pregnancy in 1994 I have been back and forth to endo for my thyroid.  During pregnancy I am hyperthyroid and a few months after, then I go hypothyroid.  I HAVE NEVER BEEN ON MEDICATION.  I was told my levels are out of whack but never enough to medicate.

Problem:  I have a goiter the size of a plum with multiple nodules.  I also have a B12 deficiency.  I have been living with the changes in symptoms (I keep having babies) for over 13 years now and the doctors seem to shrug everything as "when your symptoms start being unmanageable or your goiter starts to protrude" then we will look into medication.  They do not feel that my thyroid even needs to be ultrasounded anymore and to just get my blood checked every 2 years unless I become pregnant again.

Why am I worried, my neck feels like it is burning and it hurts right now...................

Help????

I've only had one child, last year, but I understand your problem!

I have Hashi's and was hypo prior to pregnancy. I never had issues with sensations in my neck until almost a year after my baby was born.

During my pregnancy, my TSH went from a 3 to below 1. Then at my 6 week check up I was hyper. My levels gradually increased and two months ago I was hypo. I am now currently doing well on an adjusted dose of medication.

But, sometimes I feel like my thyroid is tender or enlarged. It comes and goes. This can be a symptom of Hashi's which can cause inflammation of the thyroid. You would probably benefit from medication. At least to see how your levels respond. Maybe your doc can start you on the smallest dose. And get tested for thyroid antibodies to determine if you do have Hashi's. This may prompt your doc to prescribe something.

Pregnancy can do a real number on the thyroid! I had no idea....

Thanks for the info - I have seen the Endocronologist and they said my pregnancies make my body mimic Hashimoto's but I do not have it.  This being said, I still have all the symptoms but they will NOT medicate me.  I feel like a yoyo right now with all the symptoms but nothing being done.

Ah well, I see the doctor next week once again, maybe they will do something for me then.

Sounds like you were tested for Hashimoto's antibodies if they say you don't have it. Just post partum thyroiditis.

Good luck at the doctor and I hope you get some relief soon.
