I don't recall your history: Do you have kidney stones, too?
C~
Sooy guys - I am whipped. I got this horrible cold now. DId utah send it to Wisconsin? I really think b/c of the length of the FNA - I just had nothing left to fight off these germs going around and got slammed.
I will try very hard after work - if I make it the whole day - to go over all the information. It is a gut feeling - but I really like it sounds more parathyroid related.
First of all, CarMan, that was funny. But if one of women tried that think there'd be a different outcome. We need our own strategy! ;-)
Stella, I am so very sorry for how bad things were today!! We've all our share of these idiots who don't know what they're doing or talking about, but usually we aren't stuck 9 times in the neck for it. Did they not even do anything to deaden it? Have heard that on here before, but that was a long time ago. Hope the ice and the steroids are helping.

HI Stella,
Again I'm so sorry to know that you are going through all of this. I found the two site above and they seem to have quite a bit of information on the parathyroid and I hope they are a help to all of us, since those daggone drs doesnt know the head from a hole in the ground.
Carman is fair to say that we do get stuck alot. I wonder do they stick us cause they like it and Carman did give a good laugh.
I will keep you in my prayers
Be Blessed.
Terri
I had a nurse break a needle off in my arm years ago.....shot blood all the way across the room! (Blood presure was a little high back then). Had a Dr. hit a nerve during a neck injection......felt like somebody stuck my toe in a 220 socket. Had a liver biopsy with too small of a drug dose.....felt the whole thing. Had the blood bank train a rookie on me and she pulled back and stuck the needle in my arm like she was trying to stab a turkey.....hit a nerve that time too.
Getting poked sucks anyway, especially as many times as we've all been through it.
Should have done what I did to a dentist once. He started to work on me and said this might hurt. I reached over and grabbed a handful of his crotch and said "Try not to hurt me and I'll try not to hurt you!" Needless to say, we understood each other's position on that matter.
Hope you got a laugh, sounds like you need one.
I myself do not know a whole lot about the parathyroids. I do know that if your calcium comes back low then they will do a PTH, intact and an ionized calcium level on you, which these particular tests take about 1 week for results to come back. This will confirm whether it's hyperparathyroidism or not. We just had a patient who had this but her's turned out to be an adenoma and she had to have her parathyroids removed. I seen her incision and it was identical to having thyroid surgery. I'm not trying to scare you, just thought you might like to know what to expect if calcium levels are abnormal.
OH MY GOSH that is just awful all around .. so sorry. C~
Sorry you are going through this.
Your doctor should have or be able to call the lab today for the calcium result. It is a routine test that should be performed daily.
Don't jump ahead (like I do). Wait for the result and go from there.
You are welcome for the link. I really liked how easily it was laid out for lay people to understand.
Friends -
I have read so much this morning and after what the surgeon stated yesterday - I tend to believe it is HYPERPARATHYROID disease.
Now what do I do? it is rear and hard to get someone to help you. I did get the calcium blood work yesterday. - I suppose I wait. -
Any thoughts would be so helpful.
Thanks Kitty for that great link.
I just couldn't talk that ENT out of it - no matter what - and he stills have no proof of anything. What a clown....
All I know is I am at square one with it all. I feel like no matter what I will never get it right. I have so much down on the darn hyper-hypo stuff and now I gotta dig deep into this .
Kitty - as always thanks and AR you are my research worm I am so thankful.
All of you - I can't imagine what I did for so long without coming here and meeting you to help me.
This whole thing stinks - I swear if I lose my job over this - I will be a basket case.
Thanks everyone and if anyone stumbles across more info please share.
Stella,
I'm so sorry to here about this horror story happening to you. I didnt have to do a FNA, but from what I read, wasn't too sure about having one.
Is there anything else they can do other than the FNA to get to the root of the problem or will they just leave things as is?
Again, I am so, so sorry you had to endure this painful thing.
Feel better
Terri
What a horror story! I actually had a bad time too when they did my FNA. When I complained it hurt, the ENDO tried to say he has done them on himself and they did not hurt! I guess it was his way of saying it was all in my head. After my TT, my ENT learned that I had tons of scar tissue in my neck, so when the ENDO pushed the needle downward, it tore the scar tissue. I really don't think these docs know what the heck their doing half the time.
I read about a third of the info on that site.
What a great site! Up to date and easy to understand.
I learned a ton of stuff, and it had me grabbing lab reports and looking at results.
Interestingly, a lot of symptoms of hyperparathyroidism mesh with those of hypothyroidism. Kind of scary to find yet another disease that can be mistaken for thyroid disease, and so easily overlooked.
If the surgeon you saw today is correct, Stella, it sounds like a benign tumor and although I didn't read about it, it sounds like they have a less invasive surgery technique now similar to laproscopic surgery.
Spend time reading that link, Stella. It will be well worth your time.
Oh, wow. I am *so* sorry!!!!!
You know, a big part of the reason why I didn't want an FNA (besides the fact the nodule was so small) and just skipped straight to surgery is the FNA scared me more than the surgery. Weird, eh?
Yes, put ice on it! That will help with the pain and the swelling.
I hope that you plan on telling the kids that you have a hicky. :-)
I am so sorry you had such a horrible experience. From the other posts I have made, you know I don't understand much of this. I had never heard of the parathyroid, but will look at the website you listed.
I hope that soon this will all be solved and behind you and I feel so bad for you. What's next to get you feeling better?
Thinking of you,
Liz
You poor thing - I am so sorry you had such a horrible time!!
I had 3 nodules done at the same time (FNA)...and the doctor doing it said to me, "Are you sure you want to do 3 at once? No one does that...they do one at a time." I can completely understand why you said you would never do it again.....I told them, "Thank God you did all 3 at once, because I would never, ever come back for another after this!"
During the recovery, I found that ice packs helped sooooooooo much. Even a bag of frozen peas (they were easy to maneuver around) worked great. They gave me a Celebrex to take for the swelling and that was it. (Then I had a reaction to the cream they put on my neck, but that's another story!) Thankfully I had prescription pain pills at home, because I needed them. Get a prescription from your doctor if you don't have one already. It really helped me sleep, if nothing else.
I am sorry I have nothing to offer on the parathyroid issue, but I hope your recovery from this is swift and easy!
The parathyroids are located behind your thyroid gland.
Here is what looks like a great website with easy to understand language and illustrations.

I have learned a lot from just glancing at it quickly.
you can not imagine - as God is my witness I will never go through that again.
AR - you know abouth this parathyroid stuff. Don't you have any thought?
I don't know what to say except I am so sorry it turned out that way. :(
Hopefully someone else can make some sense out of what the surgeon is talking about and fill you in. Does he think it is not a nodule or what?
An hour and a half of probing? Makes me ill to think about it.
