Family Cancer?

I recently discovered that an aunt died from thyroid cancer (father's sister) and that her oldest daughter also had thyroid cancer 10 years ago.  Should I be concerned?  I'm hypothyroid, with goiter and take synthroid daily.  Should this be checked, what kind of testing should I request?

Just wanted to add that 95% of the time nodules are benign!

Thyroid disease does have a small tendency to run in families, but it's hard to predict if the cancer does (see postings by Utahmamma on thryoid cancer in her family). An ultrasound would determine if you have thyroid nodules, and their size. A doctor would then recommend a fine needle biopsy, if the nodules look suspicious.
