Fasciculations due to Hashimotos disease?

by Mike1975, Feb 05, 2007 12:00AM
Hello

I was just diagnosed with Hashimoto´s disease. A few month ago I experienced severe neck pain an muscleache in my shoulders. When these symptoms tended to improve my muscles - especially in the legs (calfs prefered) started to twitch. This lasts for 6 weeks now and additionally I have problems with my forearm and calf muscles (they feel a bit sore, but not much). I have no weekness or atrophy, still being strong in the gym as before. Now I am kind of terrified because of the constant twitching (just 1 or 2 twitches in one muscle in approximately 15-30 minutes).

My questions to the forum are:

1. Did anybody experience muscle twitches that were attributed to Hashimoto`s? Or does anybody know this can be part of this disease?

2. Are the other symptoms (muscle soreness, neck pain) common with Hashimoto`s?

Thans for your replies!

I experienced twitching and charlie hoarses. I believe that they are seen in hypos and well as hypers.  I take 3000 calcium, 1500 magnesium, 3500 V-D, 35,000 V-A,  along with my other daily vitamin and mineral supplements.  Plus I sleep with a wrapped bar of soap under my bottoms sheet.  If I follow this I experienced twitching and charlie hoarses. I don't know if muscle soreness (some charlie hoarses left my muscles awfully sore) or neck pain is common with Hashimoto`s. I have been dealing with the after effect from whip lash eons ago so its almost an everyday issue with me.  Perhaps someone else can answer that question.

Sorry about the first post.  I don't know how it got so messed up and some words too. :(

Thanks for your comment - I did understand (even if some software imp stirred the words up ;-)

I took magnesium, too, for the last 4 weeks, but only 400 mg a day. Maybe I should increase.
I am just concerned that the twitching could be from something even worse than Hashimoto`s, e.g. ALS.
Tomorrow I will have a complete neurologic workup - hope it comes normal.

That's good, I didn't know if I should have repost.

I understand your concern regarding something worse.  You are the only one who knows your body and you should go by your gut instincts.    Your are very wise to have the complete neurological workup, this way you will know for sure or almost for sure and its always better to be safe than sorry.

The high magnesium is to hopefully prevent osteoporosis in the following manner:
Calcium needs V-D in the right proportion for better absorption.
V-D needs magnesium in the right proportion to calcium, for better absorption.
V-D needs V-A in the right proportion for toxicity.

Anyway, good luck tomorrow with your workup and I hope it all turns out normal for you.

hi mike,
I have hasi's too and yes i have neck pain and leg twitches as well. From all I have read it is most likely a secondary symptom of thyroiditis...If affects muscles and tendons. So do take clacium and magn. supplements and don't use Statins (Cholesterolmeds)as this time because it will exascerbate the muscle pain and can be irreveresable. regards'

Thanks for your comments. I feela bit more comfortable now. This is very helpful for me since I feel that anxiety (fear of ALS or MS because of the twitches) even make them worse.

I experience so much twitching all over my legs along with cramps, specially my right calf.  I too am afraid of what else it may be.  I was diagnosed with hashimoto a few month ago.  my thyroid is still in range.  My antibodies are up and down though.  my leg muscle pain and twitching is driving me crazy.  Mike, let us know how your results come out.

HI

I`ve twitching muscles or fasciculations since 1996 ( eleven years).  That was my first symptom with tingling and numbness.  After 10 years of specialists, labs.and tests, last year I found an endo that is helping me.  I`ve very high thyroid antibodies and 2 nodules,  my TSH was also high. She told me there are 14 pages of thyroid symptoms, including fasciculations. I also have like 20 more symptoms:  dizziness, headaches, poor memory and concentration, hair loss, imsomnia, tremors, depresion, anxiety, cramps, irritable eyes, etc.
ÃŒ`m taking syntroid since July 2006, raising the dosis slowly.  The fasciculations still are there, some days better than others.  Is annoying and scary feeling those in all my muscles and all the time,
specially when I`m remainig still.  So you should be test for thyroid antibodies, TSH, free T-3,
Free T-4, and a thyroid sonogram.  I hope someday I will not have any more of these involuntary muscle twitching...

I do sometimes get horrible Charley Horses and have numbness in my face, cheek on the right side  near the nose and inner eye. This is almost ever-present tingling.

I've had two charley horses in calf muscles since I was diagnosed with hashi a few months ago. I also have carpal tunnel, numbness in hands, tingling feet, sometimes in morning biceps feel sore for no apparent reason (to name of few of my symptoms). Nothing like this ever happened to me until around the time of my hashi, hypo diagnosis. I'm still working on getting tsh down and antibodies down w/ synthroid. Good luck!
