Fibromyalgia

by jackiep248, Mar 25, 2009 02:53AM
Hi everyone,
I have hypothyroidism for about 10yrs. I take 950mg thyroxine a week. Everything has been fine until recently I started having joint pain which became worse so I had blood test which are as follows Free T3 5.27pmol/1  Free T4 15.98pmol/1 and TSH 0.20mIU/ml. My previous readings were alot lower. My doctor says I have fibromyalgia and has given me Lyrica and Betaloc as my blood pressure is quite high. He hasnt changed my thyroxine dosage which is strange if the results are alot different than normal. I had hyperthyroidism but was given radioactive iodine which made me under active. I have read that fibromyalgia is connected to hypothyroidism but my doctor doesnt agree, I have had no problems before this but this joint pain is terrible and am worried for the future. Any feedback would be great.

Gee your reply is a bit hard to understand. sorry :(

I assume 7.21 is the TSH?? correct?? or is that the T4 reading??

Is the T3 3.1 or 6.8??

Hi Jackie,

It sounds like you've done your research. I, too, have read that the majority of fibro & CFS patients have an underactive thyroid (hypo) and here is the source:

T3 REVERSE -- "The mix of treatments needed varies from patient to patient. There are some abnormalities that are common. For instance, close to 100% of individuals with these syndromes have low thyroid. This is, however, usually not picked up on the standard blood tests because the TSH is not elevated in these individuals due to pituitary dysfunction. Many of these individuals will also have high levels of the anti-thyroid reverse T3, which is usually not measured on standard blood tests. In addition, the majority of individuals can also have a thyroid receptor resistance that is not detected on the blood tests. Consequently, thyroid treatment, especially with timed release T3, is effective for many patients. T4 preparations (inactive thyroid) such as Synthroid and Levoxyl do not work well for these conditions."

One thing I can tell you about high blood pressure and fibromyalgia is that some fibromyalgia medications can actually cause high blood pressure in fibromyalgia patients !

You might want to consider posting your symptoms in MedHelp's fibro/CFS forum (I am one of the CL's in there) and we can make sure that other possible conditions have been ruled out (Chari Malformation, lyme, etc.). We also have a wealth of information about fibromyalgia in our Health Pages.

Also, I'm sending you a link (via private message) to an article about high blood pressure and fibromyalgia medications.

Best,

~PlateletGal
