Going crazy

My surgery is Wednesday and I'm going crazy thinking about is it really cancer or not? My biopsy came back highly suspicious- cytolic features are nuclear grooves, clear nuclei, psammoma bodies.  All are good indicators of cancer.  I guess my biggest fear is that the frozen section is benign and then two weeks later after final pathology, it comes back as cancer.  I don't want to go through this twice!  He is only doing a partial if the frozen section is benign.  I need to just let it go, but I can't.

I never did get an answer to what "lymphocytic thyroiditis and nodular adenomatous hyperplasia" was because the first DX on the report was Papillary Carcinoma!  Apparently, my thyroid was a mess because of Hashi's and I had no argument with the Dr. when she recommened  removing the rest of my thyroid.

I totally understand how you are feeling.  I am a control-freak by nature and I like to play for every eventuality that may occur (which annoys my husband because he's an optomistic, "nothing's gonna happen but if it does we'll cross that bridge when we get there", type.  It has taken me a long time to realize that my stressing doesn't change the outcome and that my sanity and less stress is worth giving up the control.  I found that my stressing was making everything worse and really upsetting everyone around me (it took an awful weekend and a major chewing out by my brother-in-law to make me see the light.  I'll be raying for peace for you and that all will turn out well.

Thanks for all of your encouraging words.  I guess the months of waiting come down to this and it has been an exhausting road.  I've decided that since I can't control it, I'm not going to worry about it.  It is what it is.......and I'll know Wednesday.  Thanks again.

An ultrasound in August. showed about 5 nodules in the right lobe of my thyroid.  The FNA  pathology report of the 2 largest (1.8 cm)  solid nodules done in Jan. stated 'micro follicular neoplasm', and my endo said surgically removing the lobe was the only way to be sure that it was not cancer. I was not majorly concerned as only 5% of nodules are cancer.  I knew going into the lobectomy on Feb 12 that a frozen section would be looked at and if it was definitely determined to be cancer, the whole thyroid would be removed.  I asked my surgeon & endo why don't we just take it all out and be done with it? They both agreed to treat me conservatively they felt it's better to be able to keep part of you thyroid if possible.  They could not definitively identify cancer so I had a partial done.  Only to find out 10 days later that a 6mm papillary carcinoma was found......but not in one of the nodules!  The report also said the remaining thyroid tissue showed lympocytic thyroiditis and nodular adenomatous hyperplasia.....Which meant the rest of my thyroid needed to be removed.......just the sceario you would like to avoid.  However, it has not been so bad.  I did not want to do the surgery right away unless the Drs said it was absolutely necessary (my surgeon will do it 6 wks post PT).  I was not ready so was OK'd to put it off for 3 months!  On my time schedule for a change!  I'm now 17 post TT and today I'm feeling great!!  My incision is barely noticeable (though still very tender)  I have not gained weight (at least since the 1st surgery in Feb).
Try not to worry too much, as it will not change the outcome of what is found. What is there is what is there....so visualize a benign pathology report.
Best of luck.....I'll be having ' strong thoughts' for you on Weds.

What do these terms mean in English?

lympocytic thyroiditis and nodular adenomatous hyperplasia

I didnt' realize that not only are we same-state neighbors but we both have incidental papillary cancer findings!

I've decided to keep the other side in .. even though the most recent studies indicate removal of it bcz I had more than one area of pap cancer showing up, but no lymph node involvement.

My pap cancers were small .. 0.4mm and 5mm respectively .. at least something like that .. I need to double ck. on it.

I'm so sorry you're having so much anxiety about this.  My TT was just 2 weeks ago, so I remember the same anxiety all too vividly.

All of my biopsies were negative (had 3 total) but my Tg levels were so high that some endos feared there was a "missed cancer" in there somewhere.  The endo who really pushed for surgery told me that I should expect the frozen section to come back benign... that they would most likely find the cancer at final pathology.  Well, that had me scared to death, so when the frozen section came back benign, I was just waiting for the other shoe to drop.  HOWEVER, both my surgeon and other endo (I consulted with a total of 6 b/c of the varying opinions I had) said that it is really rare for a frozen section to be benign and then come back cancer... and they were right.  Final pathology was benign.  I know that it IS a possiblity, but your frozen section should give you a good indication.  ESPECIALLY b/c they know where they're looking for abnormalities from your biopsy.

You need to go into this with all the information you can... so you are prepared for the worst, but like ChitChat said, remember ALL possibilities... benign is certainly a possiblity and should give you hope for good results.

PLEASE do keep us posted.

If the pathology report was hinting it is cancer I would think (hope) that if you need a TT it would readily present itself as such on the frozen section vs. the report saying "inconclusive", etc.and harder to define one way or the other.

But, you are very wise in covering all your bases and preparing yourself for all sorts of scenarios.  I can fully understand your apprehension going into this and I share your innermost thoughts and fears as I was once where you are now.

The one thing you need to not let go of is the scenario that it is Benign .... that is a possibility, too.

You better post as soon as you get home or have somebody post for you .. we'll be watching daily for updates.

C~
