Going for surgery 1/16/07

Hello everyone.

I just found this website while searching the net and I am so happy I am not crazy..

Last March I went to my regualar doctor not feeling real well, which led me to a endo doctor 2 biopsies later because they were inconclusive I am going to be having half of my thyroid removed and the goiter that is there.

Symptoms  hair falling out, hot/cold, anxiety, chest pain, pain in my legs, broken nails, insomnia.  The endo doctor says my blood work is normal and that I do not have a thyroid problem other than a lump. My surgeon said of course you have a problem.

I always feel like I have a lump in my throat and wake up sometimes (when I finally fall asleep) gasping for air.

My only fear is that I will have this surgery and not feel any better and maybe worse.

Thank you for listening and I will let you know how the surgery goes.  Anyone that has had the surgery how long until you felt better?

Hi kelly,

That is too funny.  I am in Gilbert,  I am going to Banner in Mesa.  My doctor in Dr. Rothman.  My husband had surgery at Banner a month ago and a few of the nurses I spoke to said if I had to had surgery for my Thyroid I was in great hands because he is the best. He is on the board of Directors, etc.  Email me your email address and we can keep in touch. My email is ***@****.  I was told 1-2 days. I probably won't be able to call and tell you how it went because I won't be able to talk. But lets keep in touch so we can swap success stories:)

Take Care

FYI there are six of us in my family who have had this surgery.  I'm the only one who liked it so much I had it twice.  :-)

All six of us have said it's the easiest surgery we've had.
All but one of us had previous surgeries to compare them to.

One sister had post-surgical vomiting from the anesthetic.  All six of us had cramps and tingling because of parathyroid issues after surgery.  It got so routine that we just started bringing each other Viactive chews (Calcium) after surgery.

I hope that your surgery goes as smoothly as ours!

Hi Jenipeni,

Thank you for that information. I hope that we are like Utah Momma. My neighbor said it was very easy. My girlfriend I think has been trying to get her levels right for 10 years. As you said it all depends on the person.  I never know if I don't feel good because of my Thyroid or it is just myself making myself feel bad LOL.

Take care and thank you for the info.

Thank you Utah Momma for that information.  It makes me feel so much better because I am the worst when it comes to pain.  I just want it to be over and start feeling good again.

Thank you again

Hi Kelly,

I am also terrified.  I had to be put on Xanax because I was afraid I would give myself a heart attack before I ever got to the surgery LOL. I know everything will be fine.  I know what we are thinking now. I really don't want to do surgery. However what we should be thinking is I hope its not cancer.  I will say  a prayer for you.  Where are you from?  I am in Arizona lets keep in touch so we can exchange our recovery.

Take Care

Hi Roberta and Kelly,

I had a Total Thyroidectomy Nov 30 '06.  It is now six weeks since surgery and I feel good except I don't have the same stamina as before - I go all pale, need to sit down and feel foggy in the head if I over do it.

Recovery times are individual.  A lot will depend on if you are have a hemi (partial) or total thyroidectomy.  The recovery after a hemi may be much quicker if your remaining gland is functioning and you don't require hormone replacement.

If you have to have hormone replacement after a hemi it can still take a long time to get levels stabilised and feel good because the remaining gland can stop and start producing hormone sporadically.

Getting levels right when taking the medication can take a long time anyway because it takes 4-6 weeks for blood levels to stabilise after each dose adjustment.

Also your present level of health and other existing conditions will come into play for recovery.

utahmomma and others like her who experience a quick recovery are very lucky - I'm jealous! The doctors will likely tell you that about a week's recovery is normal with no complications.

****There are so many variables so don't have set expectations and don't expect too much of yourself afterwards.  I was told it'd be between 1-3 weeks and was soooo disappointed that it has not been the case.

I wish you both all the best - you are right waiting is the worst part, keep yourselves occupied!  And keep us all updated too!!!

Hello both of you.

Best of everything on your surgeries!!

I've had the same surgery - twice.  Of all the surgeries I've had it was the least painful and had the quickest recovery time.  Both times I was off work for about 4 days (including the weekend).

Get plenty of rest, drink tons of fluids, and watch for any signs of tingling or cramping.  If you get those contact the hospital staff (or your doctor's office if you have been discharged) ASAP - often the parathyroids will act up after thyroid surgery and they will cause a drop in your blood calcium levels.  Many of us take calcium supplements every day since our surgeries (along with that wonderful little thyroid replacement pill).

Keep us posted and hang in there - it's not fun but certainly not the worst surgery.
