Grave's disease/hyperthyroidism just stops?

by lovemuffin11, Mar 30, 2009 06:47PM
I've had Grave's Disease for about two years now. Maybe three. I had been taking PTU, an anti-thyrpid, three times a day for about a year without problems. Then I started having palpitations and other symptoms of not feeling right and blood tests showed I was taking too much PTU. I went down to taking it twice a day for several months and it was fine. But through more tests and such, my doctor said it seemed I didn't need it anymore and I could stop taking it.

I had an endocrinologist who put my on the PTU three times a day, but then when I started having problems, she basically dismissed me and said the palpitations and problems I was having weren't my thyroid. My primary care doctor said it seemed like it was my thyroid "burning out" so I stopped seeing my endocrinologist since she did nothing for me anyway.

My question is: Is this a common phenomena, that my hyperthyroidism can just stop? Or could this be a glitch in the grand scheme of things and I will need to keep taking PTU in the future likely. Or, alternatively, is it possible for my thyroid to burn itself out and I will become hyothyroid? I'm trying to make sense of this. I'm off PTU now, but I'm having heart palpitations so I'm going to get some blood work for my levels. My health insurance ends in a month so I'm going to have to start diagnosing and treating my own thyroid disorder until I can get new health insurance, it seems.

Well, thanks. But I'd like someone to address my question. Does anyone have experience or has heard of Grave's Disease or hyperthyroidism burning out and stopping?

I have read that Graves hyper can (maybe) be put into remission with 1 year or more of anti-thyroid drugs.  However, a stressful live event can cause it to flare up again.
Since you might be without insurance soon, check to see if your lab has a cash price.
The price of my labs for TSH, FT4&FT3 is $216 billed to insurance.  The cash price is $54.  Big difference!
