Hair Loss on Levothyroxine

by msbelize, Jul 20, 2009 10:39AM
Back in December I was experiencing symptoms of hypothyroid ( depressed, extreme fatigue, cold) and my  lab results were: T3 - 25.4, T4 - 8.36, TSH - 8.5. My doctor was reluctant to put me anything, but finally prescribed Levothyroxine. Over afew months, he adjusted my meds and my hair is falling out in handfuls. I am on 50mcg a day and now my lab results are: T3- 28.8, T4- 13, TSH - 3.7. I feel much better, but I am depressed about my severe hair loss. I am a 36 yr. old female and have fine, thin hair to begin with.  My doctor said that the medicaiton could be the cause of the hair loss and to stop taking the medication and see how I feel. IS is normal for people to loose a lot of hair on Levothyroxine? Also, how long will it take for my hair to quit falling out?
