I am 12 1/2 months Post TT on 150 mcg Levothyroid and will have hair loss. I really don't know where it ends. May some one has the answer.
Thank God I had alot of hair to beginn with, but it has severely receided and I now add hair pieces to my hair.
Can you have hair thinning, breakage with hyperthyroidism?
I know stress can do it too, and I'm majorly stressed!!! Trying to decide whether to have a nodule removed. I'm 39 have fibromyalgia, high blood pressure, high cholesteral, depression ect you name it, I've got it. Last Feb. my baby was born 2 mos. premature due to preclampsia, I was anemic for a good while. He's doing great super
hyper, won't sleep kind of brat!! I however feel like I'm losing it. We already had a 10 yr old and with all my health problems and age another child wasn't really in our plans, needless to say I had my tubes tied in April, oh what a freaking year, hope 2007 is much better, not looking like it right now.
Sorry to ramble about my ****, I just need to vent!!
I'm laughing at the 500mcg misspelling. We were ALL SO WORRIED!! Thank God it is 50mcg. As for the hair, wow....mine broke off so bad especially in the front at the bangs. It is slowly getting back to normal, but I am taking a B-50 complex vitamins with biotin in it as well. Don't know if that helps, but biotin is for hair & nails.
I lost about 40% of my hair really quickly last April. I was dx with hypothyroidism in May with a TSH of 6.46.
My TSH is now where it needs to be and my hair is still thin. :( I can see new growth, but I don't think it will ever be like it was. I've read the Evening Primrose Oil will help significantly, but I have no experience with it.
Best wishes.
Okay, good, 50mcg - I feel so much better! :-)
Discuss the hair thinning with your endocrinologist (whether or not your stylist thinks it is thinning, if you see it is, discuss it with your doctor).
Hang in there - thyroids are so much fun!!
Thank you so much for the support. Yes, I mistyped my dosage. It is actually 50 mcg and I was told it was the lowest dosage. Six weeks after treatment, it changed my TSH level from 7.31 to 3.1
My hair stylist said it didn't look to her that I was that thinning and she will get me some Nioxin to use and see if that makes it feel better.
Note: this is the only med forum I am on but thanks for asking.
And thanks again for the great support. This forum makes it all so much easier to understand.
Hello, no input/knowledge here to help with your ? but I was wondering .. do you post on the Children's Allrgies Board @ iVillage? I know a Bearlady from that board :)
Cheryl
500 mcg seems high to me too. Are you sure that there's not a decimal in there some place.
Do you know what your levels were. Just curious to know what type of levels takes 500 mcg. Normally a non-functioning thyroid would take 250 mcg. to 300 mcg. However I am not a doctor so could be wrong.
Hair will stop thinning and come back to normal once levels have been regulated and stable for a while.
Did your doctor palpitate your neck? If you are having the feelings that you described need to be medically checked out.
Next test and ones thereafter, get copies with Labs reference range and you will always know where you stand as far as levels goes. TSH, FT-4 and FT-3 (FTs if your estrogen regardless from whatever).
utahmomma has good advise!
Good Luck
Here's a great primer on thyroid problems that may help you: http://www.endocrineweb.com/
I'm hoping your dosage you posted is a typo but with the hair loss you described I'm concerned that it isn't. Please keep very close tabs on your health. If you get heart palpitations, racing heart, nervousness, insomnia, etc. (you'll find it on the reference page for hyperthyroidism) then you may be facing a life threatening condition called thyroid storm which can be brought on by too high of levels of thyroid hormone drugs).
Following is a medical definition of thyroid storm which requires an immediate trip to the emergency room (someone needs to inform the ER staff about the thyroid hormone doses so it can be treated immediately instead of wasted time running unnecessary labs and tests)
SYMPTOMS The clinical manifestations of thyroid storm are those consistent with marked hypermetabolism. Up to one half patients presenting to the emergency room in thyroid storm report a dramatic weigh loss of greater than 40 pounds. Patients in thyroid storm may complain of chest pain, palpitations, shortness of breath, tremor, nervousness, increased sweating, disorientatation, and fatigue. Fever generally ranges from 100 to 106 degrees and is associated with flushing and sweating. Commonly, the increased fever (hyperpyrexia) is out of proportion to other symptoms. Usually, there is marked tachycardia, often with atrial fibrillation and high pulse pressure. On rare occasions symptoms may progress to heart failure. Central nervous system symptoms include marked agitation, restlessness, delirium, psychosis, and coma. Gastrointestinal symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and jaundice. Fatal outcomes, which usually occur in the elderly, are associated with heart failure and shock.
Please call your doctor and have your thyroid labs run ASAP and schedule an appointment with an endocrinologist for long-term care.
Are you sure it's 500mcg?? Holy cow - your doctor started you off that high?!?!!
Please post your lab results and ranges.
If your thyroid is that swollen did your doctor order an ultrasound? If not, please request one.
Also, are you seeing an endocrinologist? Thyroid disorders are their area of expertise and are best at managing our very delicate levels.
