Hashimoto's & Hypothyroid- No period

I have both- Hashimoto's and Hypothyroid. I have had always regular periods until I turned 30. That's when it was discovered I was hypo. Few years later I went to a different doctor who did additional labs and discovered I had Hashimotos. I'm now 38 and haven't menstruated for 2 years (but haven't been too good with my meds). Is it too late for me to get my levels balanced to start menstruating? I think I would like to try to get pregnant, but is it too late? Has anyone been through this?

Wow! I guess perhaps I should go to a different doctor?? My naturopath insists that I am in a good place as far as my levels are concerned. I will get my blood work done again to see where I'm at after taking Armour (60 mg) daily. I was on Cytomel before and I guess it helped, as I believe couple time before when my menses stopped I started taking Cytomel and they came back. Maybe a switch would be good again? Where do I post my results to get feedback from other members as it was suggested before?

I was having trouble getting my dose regulated and cut my ERFA dose in half and my period stopped, night sweat and hot flashes started. OB said I was in menopause after lab work.  I switched to T3 only (cytomel) as I had high reverse T3 and was willing to try anything to get my thyroid regulated.  3 days after I started the T3 the hot flashes/sweats stopped and a week later my period arrived and has been regular ever since (5 months now).  I just had new labs run Friday so I'll know then about the female hormones as well. I'm 44, almost 45.  7.7 TSH is way too high.  A lot of drs. like between .3 - 2.  Have you ever had Free T3 & Free T4 run?  That is a better gauge on thyroid health.

I am a little younger so not sure about the menopause but I missed my cycle for over 2 years and then finally got a doctor to listen to me and I have been on naturethroid for about a year and after a couple months my periods returned normally on time and have not left again yet.

I am also on Armour and have been for many years. I only go to a naturopath and she says she likes my levels and they look good, so no I really don't know. I'm on 60 mg and take every morning before I eat. Still, no period.....

How about posting your thyroid test results and their reference ranges and let members make an assessment.

Hi,
I've been having the same problem, but my labs are really different than yours. Last year my thyroid meds were changed and my periods suddenly came back as if they never went away. Now they are gone again!  So... I am either in perimenopause or my meds are wrong. I have to assume it's the meds... it always coincides with poor sleep. When my meds are correct for the thyroid, I sleep well and my periods are normal.  I haven't had that since Nov of last year (2010).  This is beyond frustrating. I too would SO love to get pregnant... now I'm 39 I feel hope is lost!  We've been trying for years.  I have one child (now 6) and he was premature (assuming from then-undiagnosed Hashimoto's).

By the way, your labs are WAY TOO HIGH... like my naturopath says, anything over a 2 for TSH is way too high for us women.  Your t-4 and t-3 also too high. You must be exhausted all the time!!  You must take your meds on an empty stomach, absolutely every day, first thing when you wake up and make sure to get your dose raised!  I personally like armour (natural) thyroid, it converts t3 from the t4 naturally and gives much better energy. Some doctors don't like it because they cannot regulate exactly how much t3 gets converted on any given day, but I've never met a person that did not love being on it or feel so much better.   My energy really improved.  I still get tired and need occasional naps but before I felt I could barely function. Good luck.  Let me know if you have any positive results or changes and take care! ps...  I also started taking a supplement called selenium to help the thyroid do it's job... and I take vitamins too (mostly in liquid form) to help issues.

Ok, I just finished my consult with my naturopath and it seems I'm menopausal. I'm only 37. So disappointed. Has anyone been told they are, menopausal, not had their menses for few years, just to have them come back??

My thyroid labs came back at:
T4- 6.4
T3- 2.7
TSH- 7.7

Any thoughts? Thank you!!

Hypothyroid will affect menstrual cycle.  Usually, once a person gets thyroid levels stable, their periods go back to normal, but you have to be consistent with taking your meds as prescribed.

Can you post your latest thyroid labs, so members can comment more fully?
