I don't know much about the hives, but I've read that allergic recations to fillers in the med (thyroixine) can cause hives. You should ask your MD about the hives and/or post on the MD forum here. Or try another brand of med to see if the hives stop. As for males being hypo or having hashi, yes, it is possible!!!! My MD is male and he told me he also takes Synthroid for hypothyroidism! The condition is more common in women, not not exclusive to females!
i have also had a lot of hives recently. i have hashimotos hypothyroidism (and maybe hyperparathyroidism as of today...), and have been taking synthroid for the past year. i find the hives have been worse if i am hyper - my mum (who has graves) finds her hives are worse when she is hypo. i have also found the hives are from an increased allergy to some foods - and im pretty sure the allergy is because of being hypo and hyper. in the past (before thyroid problems) i didnt get hives ever (well only occasionally like when i ate a whole bag of peanuts....).
i have heard that it is possible to be allergic to the medication, but i think it is likely that you could just be allergic to some foods because your thyroid levels are not quite right. im hoping the hives (yours and mine!) go away with treatment of thyroid. at the moment i just try and figure out which foods are giving me hives and avoid them.
so dont worry i think you might get better when your medication gets right.
as for guys and thyroid - sorry i only know one (i think he had thyroid cancer), but he is not on this site (i dont think anyway), but dont worry, i havent heard any bad stories about males specifically with thyroid!!
Hello... I don't think that I know what Hypothyroidism is for sure but I have suspected I've had a thyroid condition for many years. The first sign was my eye doctor asking if I've had my thyroid tested lately? Then I went on the internet... I can't remember if it related to hypothyroidism but it certainly related to thyroid... that two thirds of my eyebrows are missing (also all of my bottom eye lashes are pretty much gone). Then I started to get ... yikes my memory is really really bad... ahhh.. blisters on my chest area and wee little round red spots all over my body...a bit itchy and when I touch them I realize they are very dry... maybe like .. you have no idea how bad my memory has become....ahh.. like a dry condition where you are put on cordison... anyways I don't know what I am going through... very very itchy skin... a scalp condition and menopause... I am certainly a mess... 52 years old... female..

hi tp611,
the best thing for you to do to find out if you have a thyroid condition is asking your doc to test you for it! dry skin and hairloss are symptoms of thyroid conditions, and if you are worried you should definately get tested.
