Hashimoto's and Thyroid Removal

I read another post about thyroid removal for hashi. I have had three bouts of extreme thyroid swelling in three months.  It is really painful and frustrating.  Steroids helped a little, but I don't want to keep taking them.  Doctor said take them for 2 weeks, wait 2 months and have another scan and additional blood tests.  If it continues, she said I may need to have my thyroid removed. I am really worried about it.  Has anyone else had this done?  I worry if I have it removed my levels will never be right.  I had three small nodules 2 years ago and have not had a scan since.  I take levo 75 mcg.  Thyroid seems to swell every evening.

This is a 3 year old thread so I don't expect you will get an answer from rad44.  Sometimes adequate treatment with thyroid meds and also some selenium will help reduce the inflammation and swelling.  Have you had an ultrasound to determine if you have nodules on your thyroid gland?  Also, please post your thyroid related test results and reference ranges shown on the lab report so that members can assess the adequacy of your testing and treatment.  How long have you been taking the 50 mcg of T4 med?

I have Hashi's and am having my thyroid removed tomorrow.  I am scared.  I am having it removed cause of a large and suspicious nodule on my isthmus.  Being hashi's and my gland is enlarged and bad in texture they said there was no point keeping a chunk of diseased gland and that if it was cancer I'd need a repeat surgery and if it was not cancer then it could make it tougher getting meds normal having a piece of hashi's thyroid left in there.  I have taken synthroid for years so that is not new to me, so they said once they find the right dose, it should be easier to get me under control then with a hashi's thyroid gland because Hashi's can go up and down all the time on it's own whim.

Good luck with everything.
