Hashimoto's and diet

by healthytruthseeker, Sep 30, 2008 12:16PM
Hi.  I just was reading about Hashimotos and heart palpitations or "heart flutters".
I appreciate what everyone had to say.
Someone mentioned that their doctor put them on a diet and it seemed to really help.
I don't think I was experiencing symptoms until I suddenly switched to a vegetarian diet.
Now I'm back to meat.
The doctor put me on levo-thyroxine 25 mg.
I took it as directed for 5 days... and felt like I coudn't even get out of bed then... so I started drinking coffee rather than some tea to just get me to function.
On the 6th day I skipped the dose.
ON the 7th day I took it.
On the 8th day I skipped the dose.
Then on the 9th day I called the doctor to say I felt worse.  They said to keep taking it.  And then they gave me the results of my lab work and I dicoved that my TSH has come down more than a whole point on its own... after I switched back to eating meat.
So then, not-very-wisely-of me.... I didn't take anymore levo-thyroine (I should have cut the dose and gradually gotten off for the next 6 days or so, but what I did was:
9th day I did not take it.
10th day I did not take it.
11th day I did not take it ---- started to get heart flutters.
12th day I did not take it --- more heart flutters, and "burping?"
13th day, today, I have not taken it.  I called and left a message with the doctor about the heart palpitations... and insomnia, and "burping".

I decided I did not want to take it because it appears I was getting better on my own.
Don't feel well today.  still experienceing the flutters... drinking hot water, ate a healthy breakfast of egg, bell peppers and onions, tomatoes, potatoes, and a multivitamin plus iron.

I'm low iron too.
Low blood pressure as well.
I might make myself a cup of black tea --- but concerned because of the palpitations.
When I was a healthy meat eater---- and I mean really "healthy" --- I ate quinoa, millet, brown rice, lots of fresh veggies and fruit and then higest quality meat -- fish, chicken, and beef -- or buffalo, and vitamins....
but my iron and blood pressure has always been low and I'm always sluggish in the mornings so I always go back to caffiene to get me going.  And my energy has always been low... and I would do my best to keep it up thru exercise.
My last TSH.... BEFORE I began the levo-thyroixine was 6.1... which had come down from 7.6 after a month and a half back on meat.
Any comments welcome.
Feel like ****.

I have been there and the best I can say is...take your meds. Even if you cut them in 1/2. Take your medicine.

I went through the same thing and did the same as you...after 3 days I was sick as a dog and in the ER. Take your meds and work with your dr to find out what is going on.

Feel better soon!
