Hashimotos hypothyroidism

I don't have a question, but I wanted to comment on the person who said that their daughter is having trouble remembering things.  As you already know that it's a symptom of a thryroid problem.  But, what concerns me is that she has Hashimotos Hypothyroidism. People with Hashimotos Hypothyroidis often have Celiac Disease.  My suggestion is that she be tested for Celiac Disease.  It's a simple blood test. I wished I had known this becausae I had CD for 10 years without knowing it. Some people have symptoms, but I didn't.  People with CD can not have wheat, barley and rye.   Also, what's important is that with CD you can have so many symptoms and one of them is memory problems.  I hope you have the blood test.

I don't recall who the original poster was, but just wanted to chime in on your comment that people with Hashi's are more likely to have celiac than the general population. I was diagnosed with Hashi's a year ago and have off and on throughout my life had "flares" of some gi issues that were deemed (without any work-up or testing) to be "just irritable bowel" by a gi doc. Well, things started to flare up again about a month or two ago and just because I know about the correlation between Hashi's & celiac disease, I asked my pcp to test me for the celiac antibodies and she agreed. The antibodies came back positive so she sent me to a gi doc for further work up.

The gi doc related that celiac is actually very common in people with Hashi's and he wants to proceed with a colonoscopy to get the definitive answer. He also related that many, many people with celiac are either  incorrectly diagnosed as having irritable bowel, or never given the opportunity to have proper testing to diagnose the celiac disease. He said that a good majority of people have no or minimal symptoms and that physicians erroneously believe that if you don't have non-stop diarrhea, that you cannot possibly have celiac disease. He also mentioned that sometimes vitamin deficiencies in autoimmune thyroid disease patients with prior gi issues should also make one consider the posibility of co-existing celiac disease.

A colonoscopy, btw, is the "gold standard" for diagnosing celiac's disease so for anyone who is suspicious that you may have this condition, don't let your doc brush you off after just having celiac antibody bloodwork drawn.... they have to examine the "villi" from the small intestine biopsy to see if you truly have the condition.
