Have I been misdiagnosed?

by Kimber740, Oct 05, 2009 05:08PM
I have had large goiters all my life.  I am 37 yrs old.  They have gotten larger in the last few years.  I recently had an ultrasound and bioposies done.  Tumors were found in additon to the goiter but were benign.  I have bloodwork done about every year.  The tests always seem to come back "within normal range".  However I am very concerned with the growth of the goiter and tumors.   It seems I have every symptom of hyperthyriodism from weight gain, extreme fatigue, dry skin, husky voice and I've been taking prozac for about 2 yrs now to battle depression symptoms.
Is it possible that my levels are not being accurately read because of the goiter/tumors?  What are my options?

I can't answer all your questions, but I'm sure someone will be along soon that has more knowledge of tumors than I do.

If you have a copy of the lab report, it would be great if you could post the thyroid tests run (TSH, Free T4, Free T3, etc), along with their results and the lab's reference ranges.  That would help members be able to more fully comment on your situation.

Hyperthyroidism commonly causes weight loss.

Hypothyroidism commonly causes weight gain.

Doctors misdiagnosed me for a while because my TSH was 'normal' at a 2.74. A good thyroid doc will question any TSH over 2.0 if you also have the hypo symptoms, plus a goiter, which should make diagnosis easy.

You obviously need to go see a more knowledgeable doctor.

Do as Barb says. Post your bloodwork here.
TSH
FT3
FT4

Also, get your antibodies (TGab Anti-TPO) checked to see if Hashi is causing the goiter. Many Hashis have normal TSH and F labs for a while before the antibodies cause them to become abnormal.

This website provides recommended endos in the United States.

I just reread your original post.  You said "It seems I have every symptom of hyperthyriodism from weight gain, extreme fatigue, dry skin, husky voice and I've been taking prozac for about 2 yrs now to battle depression symptoms".   Those are the symptoms of hypOthyroidism not hypER

Although we normally associate weight GAIN with hypO, and weight LOSS with hypER, it's entirely possible to gain with with hyper, just as it is with hypo.

To answer your questions about the Thyroid levels being normal with Goiter and nodules...My Doc told me that in most cases, the thyroid levels will be in range even though a person has a multinodular goiter as in my case.
