Heart flip flops and hypo

by redheadaussie, Jan 02, 2009 10:25PM
Ok haven't got my blood test back yet, weekend here so have to wait till Monday. Now my thing is, since I know I have been getting hypo-er and depression my heart has been playing badminton on a regular basis in my chest. Thursday had the biggest match of all time, I swear that shuttlecock (you watch the censor bleep out the last four letters...lol!) was gonna come right through my chest. Took about 5 minutes to settle down and my heart raced all day and night. About 120 beats a minute. I had the shakes really bad for days before and days after.
Years ago I had similar experiences with the heart doing the fandango. I knew I was hypo but coudn't get any doc to believe me. (2.75 TSH here in Aussie land is classed as normal! grrrrr) Went to the ER and was told it was a panic attack. Years later had a virus and my heart went skiddly diddly, but was told it was coz I had a high fever. One month after my partial and my TSH was 3.75  seems to me to be hypo, dummies!
My step mother told me yesterday it was a panic attack...You are depressed so you MUST be having anxiety which leads to panic attacks...
So, if you are hypo, how many of you get these so called 'panic attacks?' Heart palpitations that truly stop you from breathing and make your heart miss beats and race and thump and carry on. (I've had true panic attacks and I can tell you they ain't NOTHING like what I am having.
So please feel free to let me know if you get them too...so I can belt my endo and others across their noggins and get some hard proof we are in fact medically unfit..not mentally unstable!
Oh and by the way when I am hyper I rarely if ever get them!
Cheers!

i am not sure what your getting at. Just because your having panic attacks does not mean that you are hyper. Especially with your range. Hyperthyroid are insomnia, weight loss etc etc. Hypos are generally tired, weak brain dead. Yes depression runs with it. I agree that I am depressed and I admitted that today to one of my friends. Depression is usually a symptom of hypos. I get brain zaps, panic attacks all the time, but that is because I have an autoimmune. I would  have your doctor make sure that your don't have one as well. Get your antiboidies checked. But I agree I have them all the time. butuntil they get my hashi's undercontrol they will not go away. Good luck But if you have depression then you should seek advice from your doctor.

I get skipped beats and odd heart symptoms when I am hypo. Why don't these doctors get it? It's in the book and everything.

I never had prolonged periods of rapid hearbeat, but I'd have short bursts. And other stuff, like I said.

Maybe it's because you are trying to outrun your metabolism and you need to slow down a little until you can educate a doctor and get your TSH back closer to 1.0 or so...

Hope you feel better soon.

No no no.. I am not hyper I am hypo...my point is being hypo brings on depression... I have been HYPER all year  with no deprssion....till the last 6 weeks when my meds were dropped.. I know being hypo in the past brings on the depression. I see a psychiatrist regularly for the past 8 years and he agrees that he now sees a pattern of depressed patients being after he gets their levels checked are in fact hypo. Sohe now gives them thyroid meds rather than anti-depressants..and bingo...they recover!
I have no thyroid any more and my anti-bodies are still relatively high after one year post surgery. I have Hashimoto's too.
My point is..ONLY when I am hypo do I get the flip floppy heart...and wondered if others notice this symptom too.

As soon as I get my tests back on Monday and see if in fact I am hypo I will up the dose again, stupid endo told me that being too high Free T4 25.9 and TSH of 0.05 was hyper so drop the dose..every time I drop my dose my T4 barely moves down.I told him I knew that that 100 mcgs is like the bottom dropping out, it's too little, yet 114.3mcgs seems to be the lowest I can take with the FT4 staying high .There's no balance..either too high or too low! No middle ground! Told him I was noticing the depression coming on weeks ago...told him give me T3... he didn't seem to care..said stay on the 100 mcgs for 4 months and see him then! so I have taken it into my own hands, but just wanted to see if the heart thingy is related to hypo from  other patients.

As we said yes. Your range isn't good enough for you. . I am learning as time goes on. You need your range reduced down lower. 1.0 level. Try that. It takes a long time so I don't know how long youve been dealing with this. But if your doctor is refusing to increase you thenfind another who will listen to your symptoms. Good luck

I "supposedly" have hashimotos and have issues with heart palpitation and a fast heart beat.  Not only do I find it disturbing....it's really annoying when I'm trying to relax and go to sleep and my heart decides to go techno dancing....  Sometimes when it does that I even feel short of breath and no, it's not a panic attack, I too know what that feels like and this is not it.

I'm beginning to think that I shouldn't even be on med's for hypothyroidism but I have had my pulse rate racing fast for a few days, then it drops sometimes lower than it should for a few days and back and forth she goes.  Every now and then it's actually normal.  Ya.

I'm not sure what a panic attack feels like but sometimes I can just be sitting at the computer cold one minute, and then the next minute I have sweat pouring off me and I get real light headed fast for about a 1/2 hour or so and then I'm fine other than the little grippy zaps of pain and usually short hard headaches.  Sometimes it's because it drops but most of the times it's because it's racing. I do get depressed sometimes anymore but I think it's because of the body pains that I get.  I hate the winter months.

I don't know if this helped or not.  So I guess maybe I'm just an odd duck.  LOL
Just thought I would chime in.  Take care and best of wishes.

I sometimes get a FEELING like my heart is racing but when I check my pulse, it's really only around 65-70.  Sometimes, it doesn't feel like it's going outrageously FAST, but does feel like it's pounding excessively HARD.

The problem for me might be that prior to the hypo dx, my heart rate was really slow - they put a holter monitor on me for 24 hrs and most of time my heart rate was low/mid 50's and when I slept it dipped down into the low/mid 30's a few times.  I got used to that low heart rate and now that I'm on the thyroid med, it's normal again, which seems way too hard/fast.

That's just my theory.  Because of the low heart rate, though, I did get sent to a cardiologist (when what I really needed was thyroid med), who ordered a stress test and echocardiogram (that old family history of heart disease) and I have an appt on Tues to get the results of those tests.  I breezed right through the stress test and all, so I don't think there's anything wrong, but I'm going to ask him.
