Help! Fertility: Is my suppressed TSH or age to blame?

Hi,

After a total thyroidectomy due to papillary cancer five years ago, my TSH remains very suppressed at <0.02 with Free T4 at 1.2 (range being .7 - 1.9) and Free T3 at 4.5 (range being 2.8 - 5.3).  Since my Frees are within the normal range, I could be considered as being subclinical hyperthyroid.  I have no hyper symptoms at all.  My current dosage of meds is 100mcg Levothyroxine with 1 1/2 grains Armour.  I feel best on this combination.

We have been trying to get pregnant for three years.  I have been pregnant twice, but miscarried both. I've also had three biochemical pregnancies. The general consensus among my ob/gyn and endo is that the difficulty with fertility is due to my age (age 41) not any thyroid issue.  I am very active with charting, BBT, etc. I have had every blood panel, miscarriage panel, fertility test/procedure possible and all come back fine.  My husband's tests are fine too.

My question to you:  Could subclinical hypERthyroidism cause fertility issues?  Could this be the difficulty with conception/maintaining pregnancies? Or, do you suspect it is my age, not the thyroid issue at play here?  What are your overall thoughts?

Thanks so much for your help!

Being male, I have limited experience to draw from regarding pregnancy, LOL, but I can tell you that having a suppressed TSH occurs frequently when  taking thyroid medication adequate to relieve hypo symptoms.  A suppressed TSH is frequently erroneously diagnosed by doctors as being hyper, and accordingly the patient should reduce meds.  In actuality, you are not hyper unless you do have hyper symptoms, due to excessive levels of the biologically active thyroid hormones, Free T3 and Free T4.  Have you even been tested for FT3 and FT4, or is your Endo one of the believers in the "Immaculate TSH Doctrine"?

I know this post was years ago but if you happen to read this, did you ever get pregnant or figure any of this out? I am in the exact same situation. I had thyroid cancer and a total thyroidectomy. My TSH is suppressed about .04. I'm on a Cytomel/Levoxyl combo. I am almost 41 and while I have one 4 year old and got pregnant pretty easy, I have been trying again for two years and have had two miscarriages. My OB says it's my age and poor egg quality at this point, according to blood tests. My Endo says it could be from being over suppressed for all these years. He wants to lower my mess but every time I do I gain weight and I am already overweight. Confused and looking for any advice. Thanks!
