Help with Labs

by gatorgal, Oct 24, 2006 12:00AM
Last year, after experiencing menstrual abnormalities, I went to the dr.

Jan. 05
Labs
FSH 6.3
TSH 2.547

This year's labs
July 06
FSH 58 (H) post menapausal
Estradiol <20 (L) post menapausal

Sept. 06
T4 9.6
Free T3 3.74

Oct. 06
TSH .91
T4 11
T7 2.9
T3 uptake 26.1(L)
anti-thyroglobulin AB <20
anti thryoid microsomal Ab <10

My gyn doc was suprized at how abruptly I entered menopause or POF becauase I am only 39. He said that usually it can be seen with another endocrine disorder or an auto immune disease.

All my thyroid levels are in the "normal" ranges but I noticed the TSH decreasing from previous level and the T4 increasing in just a month. I don't think that they actually have ordered the correct tests. I am on hormone replacement and a free T4 was not done. I am having hyper symptoms. I am seeing an Endo this week because my gyn does not think that the symptoms I have are related to menopause but possibly another hormone problem.

What other tests might be done? Could it still be related to thyroid even though my labs are in normal range? Thyroid problems run in my family.

Thanks.

It would help to list your Labs reference range.

Sept - Why didn't they do a TSH as well?

If you are taking estrogen for what ever reason or your are still producing some, Then FTs should be done instead of Ts.  And FT-3 is very helpful.  T-7 is old fashion and most doctors don't test. Uptake and antibodies levels are not impressive to thyroid issues, but heavily depends on what your levels are doing.
TSH is a little low but still in Labs ref. and T-4 is high but still in Labs range - depending on your Labs. This means possible hyper, probably too hyper for you, where you might feel better with a higher TSH and a lower T-4.  Although, normally, FT-4 is lower than T-4, therefore your FT-4 might be ok. Its hard to relate without all there levels taken together and the FTs. I assume you are not on any thyroid hormone drugs (?)
There are all sorts of reasons why levels change and your  menopause issue as well as your T-4 could be one or two reasons.
Wait to see what the endo says.  Best test for thyroid is TSH, FT-4 and FT-3.  Get copies of your test with Labs reference
range(s).  Let us know what you find out.

Good Luck.
