Help...need advice!

by patient-x, Oct 02, 2007 09:27PM
Its now over a  year since diagnosis of Hyperthyroid/Graves.

Carbimazole adjusted a few times along the way depending on blood test results.

I thought I had got so used to thyroid disease I now new before what blood results would be due to how well/unwell I was feeling.

Until now I have been right every time.

Had a 3 month wait between appointments this time...felt bad, original symptoms back, hairloss, eczema on scalp & depression.

The depression real bad worse its been.
Doc said not related to thyroid all is fine go back in 6 months, stay on same dosage.

Results are
TSH -  0.01
T3 - 2.7
T4 - 13.0
(Hope I got the T4 & T3 the right way round)

Are these results normal...is my hyper state back & thats why I my symptoms are?

Is this depression due to thyroid?

Been to my GP today has prescribed antidepressants will they help?

Thankyou in advance for any advice

The T-3 level looks like FT-3 level.

If you are estrogen by whatever means, the FTs should be done.

With that said, your TSH level is hyper suppressed.

If you could verify your levels, along with your Labs reference range, would make it easier to tell what is going on.

(i'm in UK)
I am not sure exactly of lab ref range etc.

My doc/consultant doesnt actually tell me the results I have to look on his computer screen. There are 3 colums the first TSH, next T3 the last headed T4

I feel sure I am hyper again....but he says I'm not.

Feel like having nervous breakdown, as if something affecting my brain...& its not worrying etc bought it on.

As I said GP has given me Prozac...I will take if will make me better, but before I want to know if its thyroid & just an increase in Antithyroid would be all I need.

I think I have been where you are.  I took Prozac for about 5 months and then they took me off of it.  My symptoms were anxiety.  It came on me one night in the middle of the night and I had to go to the ER.  They gave me lorazapam and it really helped.  I knew that this was different than anything I had ever had before.  They sent me to a psychiatric hospital to their ER and they said it was strictly from my thyroid putting too much hormone into my body and recommended that I go to their day program until it was straightened out.  They started me on Prozac which takes about 5-6 weeks to start working while they started working on my thyroid medicine which is levothyroxin (levothyroxine).  It took awhile to get my medicine stablilized actually they are still working on it and it has been 8 months.  I am going to therapy every week and that helps too.  I don't really know what the prozac did, I guess it helped.  They usually start you off on 10-20 mcg or mg I'm not sure which it is and I used the generic.  They started me on 80 mg or mcg, which was way too high and I felt it immediately but stayed compliant and took it.  The lorazapam helped me the most.  It took the anxious feeling away.  I felt a little doped but my husband took over my job and I didn't do much as it isn't good to drive while taking it.  I don't know about you but I feel that we need to trust God and our doctors.  Give the doctor time and the medicine as it takes awhile for it to work.  I was getting anxious about my endo because he didn't have great communication skills with me and my psychiatrist told me it looked to him like my endo had a plan and to give him time.  I have and I am getting slowly better.
I hope this helps some.  I don't think the prozac can hurt you and don't know whether it will help but give it a try.  praying for you in the U.S.   Linda   ps.  I also am through menopause and never took estrogen. (:

Thanks for your advice

So the Endo doc didnt increase the anti thyroid medication?? I have read that depression is a symptom of overactive/hyper thyroid & the correct dose will stop/prevent depression?

My endo started me on 75 mg of levothyroxin (levothyroxine), then lowered it to 50 then to 25 and finally to 37 1/2.  He said I am very sensitive to the hormone - I guess that is why I am on such a low dose.  I really wasn't depressed as much as anxious and fearful.  I was so fearful that I couldn't hardly stand it.  A friend of mine came over and prayed for me and the fear left.  It was terrible.  I do believe that the correct dose will stop depression but until you get there an antidepressive will help.  I am not a medicine taker, so the Lord had to tell me to take the medicine that it would keep me safe.  I hope people don't mind me talking about the Lord but He is part of the process of my healing.  He gives me hope that this will end and I will be ok again.  I have so much I want to do with my life yet and everything to live for and living with under or over active thyroid out of control isn't what I call living.
I am sorry to sound so down but the past few days haven't been my best but PTL I am not where I was.  Believe me I am grateful and have had a week of feeling normal and look forward to many more.  Thank you for listening to me and I really enjoy reading the posts.   lol Linda
