How/When do yall take your meds?

by TXMomOfFaith, Sep 17, 2008 06:14AM
I have heard that taking thyroid meds can be kinda tricky. I was told not to take it within 30 minutes of other pills or food. What time of the day is the best to take the meds? How soon after the 30 minutes do you normally wait to eat or take other meds? I am 50 mcg of synthroid.

I am interested in this also.  I thought I only had to take the synthroid 1 hr before or 2 hrs after a meal.  I didn't think about not taking it with other medication.  Hmmmm, very interesting.  Thanks for posting this question TXMomofFaith

I have mine sitting on the windowsill of the kitchen - right by the coffee pot.  I stumble to the sink and take it while making coffee.  I'm also taking Wellbutrin and I wait for about an hour before I take that.

On the shelf in my kitchen.  Make coffee. Add cream.  Take bottle and get one pill out and take it.  First thing I do in the AM.  Then I come online and wait 30mins to eat something and sip coffee.  Ahhhhhhhhh

If i forget to take it or elect to take something for a sinus related headache instead (cause I cannot mix the two or get spaced out) I never take it past noon or else I get too hyper the next time I take a pill .. for me it is almost double dosing sort of ... so if I don't take by 12 .. I skip one dose.  But remember I'm on this for 1.5yrs and one dose won't affect my 'stored hormones".

I take my synthroid at 6am. . .shower, brush teeth etc. etc. etc.
---7:30am take any other meds (right now an antibiotic for my root canal tomorrow ouch!)
---10:30am take my calcium supplement
---3:30pm antibiotic (temporary)
---6:30pm calcium & calcitriol
---11:30pm antibiotic
---1:30am calcium

that way I get all of my calcium supplementation in and I still have a four hour window on either side of the synthroid

I notice a HUGE difference if I don't leave a 2 hour window on either side of taking my Levoxly.  I keep the pill and a water bottle on my bedside table and set my alarm for 5:00 am. I wake up take the pill and go right back to sleep till 7:00.  On days where I vary from this usually due to not filling my water bottle the night before. I have a hard time rolling out of bed before 9:00.  I say work for a 2 hour window on either side and take with at least 8oz of water.
Lilypad thanks for your schedule I think I will adopt if to fit in my calcium.

I Take mine first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. My prescription bottle even has it in print "take in the morning". It also states do not take within 4 hrs of taking antacids, iron or vitamins, or mineral supplements. Take with plenty of water.

I take it first thing in the morning at about 4 a.m., which pretty much guarantees it’s on an empty stomach.  Then I wait two hours before eating or drinking anything.  I wait at least four hours before taking calcium/vit d and would wait that amount if I were on any other med as well.

The night before I leave out a full glass of water on my dresser and have the med right there.  That way I can take the med, down it quickly with the water and not have to think about it all too much.  Thinking about it all too much can get me down.

Good luck.

I'm on 50 mcg too for Hashi's and hypo.  I take the thyroid pill as soon as I wake up, about 6am with 1 full glass of water.  I wait 1 hr. to eat breakfast and drink green tea.  Then, I split my other pills between just after lunch, and just before bedtime (or after dinner if we are going out and it will be a late night).  I find it's really not a problem, just a matter of getting used to the schedule.  The important thing is to take the thyroid pill on an empty stomach and separate those other pills by at least 4 hours from the thyroid hormone.  I bought two pill boxes with separate compartments for 1 week's time, one for noon, and one for night --so now it's easy to see if I have taken my daily pills or not.

I am hyper and not even on the blockers any more. I experimented with all sorts of combinations and schedules, etc., and none of them seemed to work for me. The only thing I DID notice was that I felt extra depressed if I took the whole gob at once--as if it was temporarily blocking the hormones TOO much at one time.

In the last 14 years that I've been taking Synthroid...I've seen so many combinations of how and when to take the tablets.  It use to be take with food, then take on an empty stomach, then only take it in the evenings before bed, then first thing in the morning...and the changes have continuted to go on and on...I am positive that they will change again as people report on how it reacts to their bodies.

I gave up on trying to keep up with all the changes on how to take the med... for me...I remember to take my med the best right before I go to bed...after I brush my teeth.

As for other meds, I usually take all of my other meds in the morning and if I am put on anything else, I just make sure there is at least a few hours inbetween.

When they gave me the prescription at the hospital at discharge from my surgery, they told me to leave a 30 minute window between the synthroid and other meds or food. When I went to see the doc for my post op follow up he said the best time to take was right before bed time since my stomach would be empty.............well he obviously doesn't know that I am a late night snacker! hahahaha. I have tried to take it in the morning but if wait longer than about an hour with no food, I get really sick to my stomach. I am also on antibotics right now. So for now I get up and take a synthroid at about 6am with some water. Then at around 7am I take my antibiotic with my breakfast. I don't know if it is all working or not. I am also still on some pain/antiinflamatory meds and I take them about lunch time. They totally wipe me out and I half to have a nap in the afternoon...........but I don't know if this is from the other meds or the synthroid.

My schedule is much the same as yours except I am beginning to take my Prevacid at night.  I am not suppose to eat anything containing fiber, prevacid or calcium within 4 hrs. of the synthroid.  If I get organized enough, could take synthroid before getting up then would be able to have my cereal before 10.  The only non fiber food I have found to have before the 4 hrs. expire is egg sub.

I started by taking my thyroxin in the morning after a coffee ( no food for an hour) and vitamins at night.
Then I took thyroxin at night and vitamins in the morning.
But went back to taking in the morning because I was having broken sleep taking it at 9.30 at night.
As long as you take it at the same time, with the same consistancy and routine, then you shouldnt have any problems.
I did take a med with it one morning and felt as if 'i wasnt here' feeling so wait an hour before taking heart med.

I am just starting on this synthroid regulation journey but this is the advice my Endo gave me and it makes sense.  He said that taking it with food and other meds affects the absorbancy of the meds...it really doesn't matter which you do, as long as you are consistent and do the same thing every single day.  If you take it with food one day and no food the next, then your body is not getting the same level of med every day and your levels will fluctuate.  If you do take it with food daily then you will probably just require a little higher dosage daily than if you take it without food.  Just be consistent with whatever way you choose.  I am one month post thyroidectomy and trying to follow this advice...I get my first labs drawn soon so we'll see how things are going.
