How does Synthroid Dosage work?

by aimeenp, Apr 20, 2009 02:58PM
I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's and my original TSH level was at 94.  I saw an Endo and they put me on Synthroid 100mcg.  I just had my thyroid retested and my TSH level is now at 9.  The Dr. increased the dosage to 112 mcg.

My question is if 100 mcg brought my levels down 86 points would that mean adding 12 mcg would bring my level down an additional 10ish points?  Does it work that way, in a linear fashion?  Just curious how the dosing works, to see if i can estimate what my optimal dosage should be.

Oooh, I wish it were that simple!  We (hypos) would all be so much happier!

TSH often takes a big initial drop once you start meds.  After that, when you get into the fine-tuning stage, it's pretty much trial and error.  You see what dose is too little, what's too much, and you settle somewhere in the middle.  12 mcg could bring your TSH right into normal range, or it might take another increase, or you might find you have to go halfway between because it's too much.  No way around it, I'm afraid.

How long did it take for your TSH to go from 94 to 9?  Just wondering, my TSH was 86 and I have been taking 100 of Synthroid for almost 4 weeks now.  I go to the endo in 2 more weeks, where I'm sure he will do more blood work.  Just wondering.  Do you feel better?  Less fatigue, etc?

I totally agree with goolara.....'tweaking' is hard but well worth the effort.
Good posting goolara.
