How much iron is safe to take daily?

My ferritin was 21 six weeks ago and went up to 42 after taking 109mg elemental iron, but I need it to go up to 70-90. Would it be safe to take twice as much iron?

This is something you should discuss with your Doc as everyones metabolic rate of absorbtion is different.

My doc said he doesn't know anything about iron and thought 42 was a good range. So he's no help.

inexcusable!! why are we paying these people? how can a dr. not know about something as simple as iron? at least he admitted his incompetence...downright scary....i was brought up in the era of "talk to the doc'. i find these things appalling.we're not cars, computers, and such. human beings need MUCH better care..but what do we do? well, that doc didn't help.....so go to 4,5,6 more.and then they wonder why we have no trust or faith in the knowledge they're supposed to have...or at least, try to get with continuing education

The very scary and sad part of this, is that means we are overloaded with bad dr.'s. many people will trust what a bad dr. tells them. i have had 4 different dr.'s, none have truly understood my thyroid, including an Endo that specializes in thyroid. i'm still undertreated, and waiting to see the 5th dr.!!!! it's a huge WRONG that needs to be dealt with..and in these tough times, so many people are uninsured and unemployed. for them the dr. shopping isn't an option. Time for patients to open our mouths and not our wallets...don't pay a dr. that has no clue how to help.HA, doctor shopping used to be for those trying to find addictive drugs..getting more from multiple dr.'s..this so called health care system is doing all of us a great deal of harm!!

I've seen 6 docs in the last two years. Only two even tested my ferritin and that was at my request not theirs. One doc said my level of 20 was fine. This last doc at least agreed it needed to be at least 70, but he had no clue what dose to take. I'm no closer to getting my thyroid fixed than I was two years ago. Oh, and when I asked this last endo if he could check my hormones, he said he didn't know anything about hormones. An endo who knows nothing about hormones??? Now that's scary!!!

I don't have money to see these holistic docs who could probably help, because they don't take insurance. So I'm left to keep trying mainstream docs who seem to know nothing.

My point exactly!!! This is so very wrong. I'm still having problems with my thyroid after 4 years. If the last doc i saw in march sends me a bill i will NOT pay it..they knew i wanted him to help me with my thyroid before i made an appointment. Nothing was said about the fact that he has no idea how to treat me..i left there without paying my copay..my lvl's are off and he didn't change a thing...asked for t3 and the office told me to go to the HEALTH FOOD store...I'm not paying for bad health care anymore..I hope you find some help for your health problems....but I believe that we've been a part of this problem when we Dr. shop..and don't hold the crappy doc's accountable. They still get their money...from stupid dr. to stupid dr....I'm sick of it all

Every doctor's office I go to makes me pay the co-pay before I see the doctor, so I have no choice.
