I have alot of faith in 898 and his suggestions. I think you got great responses on this post.
My diagnosis was the same for a thyroid nodule (multiple). I had a Total Thyroidectomy done due to the diagnosis. Before deciding, i had three opinions in total and i suggest that you do the same. Waiting an add'l few weeks for an appt won't harm anything at all.
If they all say, get it out, then get it out!
Because it is hard to tell the difference in benign and malignant cells in Hurthle Cells using a FNA, removal is usually recommended to determine. All of my biopsies were benign but because of the Follicular and Hurthle Cells within the nodule, there was a chance of malignancy, so i had it removed.
Most nodules with cystic degeneration require careful evaluation.
The biopsy must be ultrasound guided in order to get the specimen from solid “original part of the nodule”. Occasional loose Hutrtle cells are commonly present in the nodules.
If the pathology report cannot differentiate between follicular and hurtle cell neoplasm I would strongly suggest getting second opinion about biopsy result
How big is this cyst? If the biopsy advised surgery, then it can be better to be safe than sorry. Usually nodules/cysts over 2.0 cm are recommended for removal, however if the biopsy recommended findings are to remove, then I advise you speak with a surgeon.
My mom had hers removed. It turned out to be benign. She was back to her normal self within a week, but now she does take thyroid hormone every morning.
Thyroid cancer, if that's what it is, has a VERY high cure rate. Mom's doctor said if he had to get cancer, then thyroid would be it.
Find a surgeon who does at least two of these surgeries per week.
