Hyperthyroid and Pregnant please do not judge

Hi I just found that I am pregnant. Maybe about 3 weeks.  I take methimazle and propranolol.  I had graves before I became pregnant.  This was not a planned pregnancy.  I actually had a doctor appointment with a obgyn this week to get on birth control.  I found out that I had graves in January.

I do not like the fact of taking medication while pregnant.  I do need the propranolol becasue the heart rate is still not under control.  There are so many side effects to these drugs.  I know that some women do take thyroid medication while pregnant. This is a very touchy subject I complete understand.  I would normally would be pro-life but giving the medical problems and the way I feel and having 2 children at home that need me I find this as my best answer.

Will an abortion put me at risk for a thyroid storm?  I am on medication.  I also understand that I am not the first women out there that has done this because of hyperthyroid/graves disease.

please be nice

Once a baby is born, reproductive hormones would return to normal.  Thyroid conditions affect us all differently, but lying is not a specific symptom of any thyroid disease.  Lying is a moral issue, not a medical one.

And would normallity come back after she has had baby or would this be it now this behaviour ? and would a person with this tend to lie about things that never happend ?

I'm sorry she has cut contact with you.  The only thing I can answer, at this point, is yes, thyroid, pregnancy hormones, etc can cause a person to behave in this manner.

Her reaction could be a combination of things, including both thyroid and being pregnant.  When we get pregnant, our reproductive hormones are really different from when we aren't pregnant.  Additionally, hyperthyroidism, can cause similar reaction from too much thyroid hormone.

I'd need to know what her actual thyroid hormone levels are in order to help determine whether her reaction is thyroid related.  If she's got hyperthyroidism, I'd assume she's on anti-thyroid meds, is that correct?  The meds would tend to calm her down, not cause such a violent reaction.

Symptoms of hyperthyroidism  can mimic those of bi-polar.  Many people who have thyroid conditions are given antidepressants, when they should, in fact, be given thyroid medication.

Does your girlfriend have hyperthyroidism?  What meds was she on?  Thyroid conditions need to be monitored carefully, while one is pregnant.

Hi,

Barb asked me to come here and give some input.

I am experienced in pregnancy with hypothyroid, not hyper.

However, I do beleive that the medical side of this can be managed successfully.  There will need to be close monitoring, but this is doable.

I would think if you decide to proceed they would want you on PTU instead of methimazyl.  As far as I can see from the literature it is not clear if the betablockers have risk, but certainly in your case the benefits outweigh the risk.  I guess the trick is also to use the lowest dose of meds that will do the required job too.

I am sure that your risk of thyroid storm is low if you proceed or if you decide on an abortion.  But close monitoring could catch things if things did start going out and they could be managed.

More of a question is whether you really want another baby.  Seeing it is so early you do have some time to think about this.  If the thyroid were not in the picture how would you feel and what would you do?  If you did decide not to proceed with the pregnancy and then wanted another child in the future and it didn't happen, would you still be ok??

No easy decision here.  Take your time and see what your heart says, as well as your head.

Best wishes to you and your family.

I just found this thread and wanted to get more information from you.  I too just recently found out I was pregnant - probably around 4.5 weeks.  I was in denial for about a week.  We have one healthy 5-year-old boy and lost one pregnancy at 6 months due to Downs Syndrome and a hypo plastic left heart.

In January, I was diagnosed with mild hyperthyroidism.  They have tested my TSH levels only twice and they were 0.24 each time.  My general referred me to an Endo but I haven't been able to get an appointment after a few months.  My general doctor even suggested that the hyperthyroidism might not even be bad enough to treat.

My biggest concern of course are birth defects.  I've been down that road before and it's a particularly damaging one.  I read that you think the rate of birth defects are not great for hyperthyroidism.  Do you feel that the risk of defects might not be so severe with a "mild" case of hyperthyroidism? Are there any medical resources where you've researched this condition that I too could look up?

I am extremely healthy and eat a mainly whole foods diet - no smoking, no drinking, no medications and plenty of exercise.  Multivitamins seem to mess with my system and make my heart flutter more so I'll need to find some sort of vitamin option.  Any suggestions on that as well?

I have also recently moved and will be finding a qualified OB ASAP.  I just found out about the pregnancy today.

Thanks for any help you can offer!  The next couple of weeks are going to be very disturbing for us.

Hello - I don't want to ignore the posters as I just skimmed over their responses. I wanted to concentrated onyour posts in your words. Most importantly put to rest, the judgement you write of. That, my dear is nothing on this community. We all here can bring to the table our fears we are facing and members who respond will give each post the respect it deserves. Let me first say, welcome to MedHelp thyroid.

I'd like to see what I can offer to you medically informed as a Graves autoimmune patient myself and emotional and unstability it can bring.  Also as a dedicated researcher of thyroid disease ALL forms as I was forced to do to save my own life-- twice in 7 years.

I am going to pick things quoted above to address and hopefully ease stress for you hope you respond

Not a planned pregnancy you say? That is a shock to a woman in many forms and really you are THE only one that has to deal with ALL of it in its enterity. Statics show more unplanned pregnancies are more common than organized ones.. (sigh) . I too,  fell under that senerio - not once but TWICE with both of my boys. "God's gift"  no matter how dealt to us - was the perfect way to put and lets assume this is exactly you.

You're correct - many women do take thyroid medication while pregnant - more often you will read hypOthyroidism is the majority- not hyper. This condition of hypO - not hyper is more common with patients needing treatment. Being hyperthyroid also Graves autoimmune can semi put us as a seperate entity due in theory to the popular medical thinking that hyper is more risk than hypO.

False... false ... false... lie... lie  lie!!!!

Thyroid disease as a whole is no more dangerous one way - as it is the other. Its horrible and if  IT is NOT controlled properly with the right doctor'care - who gets thyroid either way it could cost you your health ,life or change you forever as a whole.

Make sure you heed my words as a patient myself and what out there regarding this  hormonal situation. GOOD doctoring - PROPER knowledge and RIGHT treatment is a must and many patients hyper OR hypo find it a REAL struggle and SEARCH to find the right care for them.

With this understanding on how ill-ranged thyroid can be a struggle, lets take a look on you when actually you were first were told of this Graves. Could you share the actual labs with me? Tell me how this whole thing started and took you to this doctor that testing your thyroid labs? What actual tests were done on you to determine this? Do you have the lab report from those labs? What followed after the labs? Did you have an ultra sound or something also called a thyroid uptake scan?

sorry about all the ???'s - it could be very important to know

It would be obvious that if you are on antithyroid medication and beta blockers you do have issues. Common symptoms (and CAN be with opposite  hypothyroidism) is heart palps, anxiety, shaking, sensitive to heat or cold, mood swings, irrational thinking or false solution decisions, anger, nausea, and weight changes.

How many and what do you have right now?

Taking perscriptions during a pregnancy is very hard - mostly because of what was drilled in our heads for as long as we can remember. Drugs are bad. Drugs are not good for us. We shouldn't need Drugs. While pregnant - be as PURE as you possibly can .. no Drugs.... - etc etc etc.

The truth is - YES be as pure when carrying even not carrying for that matter. But if we ARE truly sick and our body needs help .... then best to KNOW - treated correctly and be able to move forward with the right meds knowing HOW to stay for the LONG haul then find something disasterous too late!

ESPECIALLY hormone related and a female dealing with hormones constantly.

I look at it like this - after the circus of he// I had. You have been blessed NOT once BUT twice with God's gifts. Baby as ONE - Discovering a thyroid disorder as TWO. The trials of mental beating we take on a double whammy like this all is -definately a test for you good standing as a person that will go on. Wouldn't you agree?

Yeah - thanks God - I'd be say'n.  (joking and jovial of course in lightness)

OK - Back to understanding

Medically as above you are way over the top with the nightmare with the disease and being pregnant all in one. Likely - if that hyperthyroid - could be realizing things are not quite as you need as hormones ( thyroid) can trick us in many ways. Your want body and mind to be good now and scary thyroid can convinced - you are in a situation and need to DO something ASAP!  Its not true or should be acted in all senerios. You have possibilities to regain and heal better than ever - EVEN  repairing or "cure" ( for a better word)  your entire condition utilizing this full term pregnancy. I'd hate to see that be the case after a hastful act to abort - then find out it wasn't the right thing to do.

That's why most  hormonal diseases are hard to get over. Hormones are unpredictiable and can be decieving. When it looks grim to bad by the next day or event can be good.

It is not as critical as above, you just don't know or understand it all yet. It is very manageable if key things are done. Monitoring,  proper treatment and knowledge is great.

This is important to all thyroid patients to know, not just the pregnant ones either.

Acutally in research- chances of the deformaties are more associated with hypothyroidism which rare  - then hyperthyroidism prenancies - taking ALL thyroid disease into consideration.

If you want me to provide medical journals on fact as others - I will do that to ease you some. Hormonal transformity risks are there with "normal" pregnancy - more so than the ones that are caught with YOU.

The risk of hyper storm, goiter or congenitial thyroid disease at birth or 2 months is next to impossible and less than credibility - and highly unlikely you could be in danger with proper care.

On fact- look at magpieanne posts - there was NO WAY any of her situation could have been found prior to her daughter's birth.

My slogan      "IT is.... what IT is-at this time. I've learned this to say.

You can't "control" my dear -  by concluding an abortion is the answer out of fear - (if thyroid disease is your sole reason to abort)  - and move forward. It doesn't work that way.

Please post the labs. Answer the questions above. I think it would be a good thing to discuss this more when you provide some of important information we need to see.

Take care .Till next time

I do not know what the medical risks that these medications can possibly have for you or your unborn child. However, what I do know is that in todays over reliance on big pharma drugs, that there are many pregnant women who must take all types of medications during their pregnancies, and that there are specialist to help with this before and even after the pregnancy if needed. There are high risk OB's that deal with issues just as yours, who can assemble a team of doctors (endo.'s and cardio.) to help with your case in a successful way!  There are healthy babies born everyday who's moms have medical issues very similar to yours. I believe in my heart that this baby will be fine. I know you are scared of the "what if's" however, only God can truly guide you here. I would be more then happy to help you in any way that I can. I am so in prayer for you and your child right now. I found this verse in the Bible. God's reminder and help to us all in times such as these. Go to Him!

Psalm 139:13-14  "I created your child's innermost being; I knit your child together in your  womb...this child is fearfully and wonderfully made...don't ever forget that."
Love,  Your Heavenly Father

My daughter was born without a thyroid gland and she is normal in everyway and now 9 years old and in the third grade! No retardation, no low IQ, no growth retardation and she is definitly a gift from God! I could not imagine life without her! This life in you is also a gift from God. There are no guarantees in life, however there is a very good chance that your baby will be born just fine. Even if there is some sort of genetic transfer of thyroid problems, that does not mean that life would not be worth living. If you are on Facebook there is a site for "Parents of Children with Congenital Hypothyroidism." There are many photos posted there of the kids who where born with CH for one reason or another. I encourage you go there and see them. They are "normal" kids! Did you have thyroid issues or were you on any medications when your other two kids were born?

Your best bet is too take all the information your doctor gives you about the effects on both you & your unborn child.

Look over it carefully, weigh the pros & cons. Talk to those that need & will be involved in this decision making. Ultimately it will be up to you. This in my mind would be hard as well. I can't tell you what I would do because I am not in your shoes. I know you will in your heart & mind make the correct descision whatever it will be will be the correct one for you, NOT what others want you to do.

hi the last post I gave was for you also.   The doc has told me the chances of everything.  He was a prolife doctor.  I will be seeing a different doc in a week.  He will talk to me about both choices.  I know from the understanding that women with this before they become pregnant have a higher rate of miscarriage.  I was also told that some do choose to abort because of the drugs and because of the hyperthyroid and graves.  I have to take the propranolol because if i don't my heart rate will be in the 120's.  Without the propranolol I will have heart problems.  Without the methimazole  well thats is just dangerous.   So I have no choice than to take them.  I could take the ptu.  but i'll still be on the propranolol which is only giving if it has to be becuase it is not recommended for pregnant women. Unless it's a must.

Do you see why this is a touchy subject?

Giving birth i see has more chances of problems than having a abortion.

Yes i am afraid of the side effect of the drugs on the baby.  I am also afraid for myself, and my family.  There is so much that can go wrong.  It's like playing with fire in my eyes.  I am just afraid that having a abortion will cause me to have a thyroid storm.  I do know that there are women that have graves and had healthy babies.  I just don't want to take a chance.  I do have a close friend that had graves before she got pregnant.  she went on the ptu before she wanted to get pregnant and had a baby girl.  This baby is healthy but a little behind in milestones.  But she is gods gift.
My friend was on a low dose also.

I also know that my baby can be born with hyperthyroid, graves, a goiter could even be a healy baby and then at 2 months all the sudden have a thyroid storm.  There is also a chance for delvelopmental problems, deformation, mental retardation.  Then with me taking propranolol I have a different round of problems there.  There is just so much.

it's playing with fire.

What has your doctor told you about the effects it will have on the baby if you take it while pregnant? Or the effects on you taking the medication while pregnant? Or not taking the medication?

You need to ask your obgyn.

Only one judge in my eyes, & I'm not him.
