Hyperthyroid caused by Synthroid

My husband has been taking Synthroid for five years now due to an underactive thyroid.  He has always looked more like an overactive thyroid patient in that he is very thin 6'.0" @ 160 lbs.  He does have prominent eyes and has been asked by many doctors if ever diagnosed with hyperthyroidism.  He has been experiencing symptoms that we now see are consistant with hyperthyroidism for a couple of months.  He had his level checked today and the T4 was 17, normal was said to be 6.1 - 12.2.  He is currently taking 100mcg of Synthroid a day.  Could it be as easy as having the dosage adjusted or going off the Synthroid?  The doctor mentioned Graves disease today and scared him.  Wouldn't this just be considered drug induced rather than Graves?

I am 99% of the way there after numerous bouts of hyper after RAI and TT due to Graves and Hyperthyroidism.
My Doctor alternated my meds when the dose was too high.
To start with, he took me off thyroxin for 2 days to bring the levels done a bit (I was on 75mcg thyroxin) then he alternated by 50mcg Tues/Thurs/sat/sun and then 62.5mcg Mon/Wed/Fri.
This brought the levels down to a comfortable levels and I have labs done again this week.
I have been on this combination for approximately 3 weeks as my levels change within 3 days of a dose change. I am super drug sensitive.

Maybe he could alternate with 100mcg and 75mcg?Ask the Docotr about this.

Hope this info help but PLEASE see your Doctor about this.
Do NOT even attempt it on your own without the Doctors approval.

I had the same problems for at least 3 years. Just found out that my PCP had me overmedicated on synthroid. Caused all sorts of problems with racing heart, anxiety, weight loss. The list of hyper symptoms is sooo long. I went off my med and within 2 weeks I was feeling like my old self again. If the TSH is very low and the Free t4 is on the high end of normal he is defintly overmedicated and that could be the problem. I went to see and endo last week and we changed my med from 88's to 50's. What a difference it has made.
Good luck...Dawn

Graves should be diagnosed with an antibodies test, not just by being hyper. So there should be a basis. I have heard of people with both Hashimoto's and Grave's antibodies, and essentially being both hyper and hypo at the same time. So make sure you get a copy of his tests, make sure the doc runs all the antibody tests - check out labtestsonline.org for the names.
Always get copies!
Good luck!
